Nate River (ネイト=リバー, Neito Ribā) is a Japanese Undercover Detective, Police Assistant, SPK Leader, and the final villain in the series of Manga and Anime Series Death Note created by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata.


Nate River ( ネイト=リバー), also known as Near, was born on Saturday, August 24, 1991 (Anime) at Wammy’s House (Watari’s orphanage for gifted children in Winchester) England. (age 13 years, pre-time skip; 17 years post-time skip; 21 years post-series one-shot; 27 years Never Complete One-shot; 8 years L: Change the World; 19 years Death Note: New Generation; age 28 years as of 2023). His zodiac sign is Virgo. His blood type is B. He was introduced as a young boy working to collect the details of the case related to Kira and bringing them to the President and created a Special American division cell called SPK (Special Provision for Kira) and was declared the successor of L. He became successful in accomplishing the task left by L Lawliet and identified Kira.

Nate River was shown as a very innocent and intelligent boy who loved solving puzzles and playing with toys. He was very mature for his age and could take decisions with a calm and rational approach and has even ready to work along with Mello, his brother. He outsmarted everyone and was able to accomplish what no one could with his brain power. He was not sad about L’s Death but instead felt nothing for him and considered someone who couldn’t solve the puzzle. During the sacrifice of Mello, Near felt thankful and sorry for the loss of his sibling, Mello. His personality type is INTJ.

The name of his father and mother is not known. Nate River was raised in an orphanage for Gifted Students in England, where he was raised along with L Lawliet and Mello (Mihael Keehl) (the supposed elder brother of Nate) by Quillsh Wammy (also known as Watari).

Nate River was raised in Japan, a country where Shinto is a common religion. But as per fans, it said the Near is supposedly Catholic.


After the events of Death Note Part 1 and the death of L, Nate is introduced who along with Mello is going to follow the work of L and discover the mysterious person behind the killings. He was an extraordinary child who consider cases as solving puzzles and hence started working with SPK to catch Kira. He worked for 4 years to understand the case along with the CIA and FBI to solve the case. He was able to figure out that Light Yagami was Kira and was able to outsmart him and catch Kira. After that, he became known as the Third L and is working to solve crimes.

Near appeared in 2012 in the anime, 4 years after the deadly events of L in episode 26 “Renewal” in part 2 of Death Note.

Being a genius is the greatest level of power a person can acquire, and with regard to this, Nate River was the smartest, most deceptive, and most intelligent person in the Death Note Universe. He also had the people of American agencies and their full support with direct relations to the President. He has also created a Special Division for catching Kira. He was able to use his detective skills and powers to bring forward the egoist Kira (Light Yagami) and got him to be caught in a trap. Brainpower and planning are used as his great powers.

  • Near has only interacted with L once in his life.
  • Other than Nate, he was also referred to as Neito Ribā, L’s Successor, New L, and Agent B in the series.

  • Near wears a white outfit with a matching white hat and gloves, which cover most of his body. He also wears goggles that he uses to observe his surroundings and to protect his eyes from bright lights.
  • Near’s appearance was inspired by the character “No-Face” from the Studio Ghibli movie “Spirited Away.” The creators of Death Note wanted Near to have a unique and mysterious appearance that would make him stand out from other characters.

  • In an interview with Death Note’s creators, it was revealed that Near’s name was inspired by the phrase “near-miss,” which means an event that narrowly avoids a disastrous outcome. This reflects Near’s role in the story, as he is constantly trying to prevent Kira from achieving his goals.
  • The toys shown in Near’s collection in Death Note were inspired by the personal collection of Takeshi Obata, the artist of the series, who is known for his affection for toys. Obata incorporated many of his own toys into the series.
