Love Interest- Girlfriends

In the manga/anime, Tobirama’s character showed no interest in women.

Tobirama and his brothers endured a challenging upbringing. They engaged in warfare against rival clans, particularly the Uchiha. Tragically, their brothers, Kawarama and later Itama, lost their lives. Following the losses of these loved ones, Tobirama and his elder brother Hashirama desired a new shinobi system that would break the cycle of children’s involvement in wars and encourage peace.

The Senju and Uchiha clans, along with their affiliated clans, united to establish their dream shinobi system and named it Konoha. While Hashirama, the village’s leader, held an optimistic outlook for its future, Tobirama, his brother, remained realistic and understood that the Uchiha, especially Madara, posed a threat to that future. Under Hashirama’s guidance, the system of ninja villages brought about a period of peace. During this time, Tobirama formed his own team consisting of Hiruzen Sarutobi, Homura Mitokado, and Koharu Utatane. Tobirama invented some of his own techniques, like the Shadow Clone Technique and Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation. However, he prohibited their use, as he considered these techniques unnecessary.

Before his passing, Hashirama entrusted the role of Hokage to Tobirama and advised him not to mistreat the Uchiha. As Hokage, Tobirama’s responsibilities included guiding and protecting Konoha’s shinobi. To achieve this, he established institutions such as the Academy, the Anbu, and the Chūnin Exams. As a gesture of trust and to keep an eye on the Uchiha, he assigned them to handle the Konoha Military Police Force.

Masashi Kishimoto, the creator of the Naruto series, is responsible for bringing Tobirama Senju to life. When developing Tobirama, Kishimoto drew inspiration from various sources, including Japanese folklore and historical figures. He aimed to create a character who would embody the ideals and values of the Senju clan. Also, Kishimoto designed Tobirama’s character as a wise and down-to-earth leader, contrasting with the idealism of his older brother, Hashirama.

Elements Of Personality Traits

Masashi Kishimoto, the creator of the Naruto series, carefully developed and shaped the character of Tobirama Senju, the Second Hokage of Konohagakure. First and foremost, Kishimoto focused on portraying Tobirama as the opposite personality of his older brother, Hashirama. While Hashirama was known for his noble perspective and charisma, Tobirama was more logical and analytical. This contrast in personality allowed Kishimoto to explore different leadership styles and philosophical perspectives within the Senju clan.

The Second Leader Of Konoha Village

As a founding member of Konohagakure, Tobirama’s dedication to protecting the village and its inhabitants was a key attribute. Kishimoto emphasized Tobirama’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability, even if it meant making tough decisions that were not always recognized. Another aspect of Tobirama’s character was his strategic and tactical brilliance. Kishimoto wanted to portray Tobirama as a highly intelligent and perceptive shinobi who excelled in planning and analyzing situations.

Relations With Other Characters

Tobirama’s affinity for water-based techniques reflected his connection to nature and the elemental forces. And in terms of appearance, Kishimoto designed Tobirama with distinct features, including his white hair and unique markings on his face. Furthermore, Kishimoto explored Tobirama’s relationship with other characters, particularly his interactions with Hashirama and the Uchiha clan. These dynamics provided insight into Tobirama’s complex emotions and highlighted the challenges he faced in maintaining peace and unity among different factions.

Tobirama Senju’s story and missions are involved with the establishment and development of Konohagakure, the Hidden Leaf Village. As the Second Hokage, Tobirama helped in shaping the village’s foundation and safeguarding its interests. One of Tobirama’s primary missions was to establish a governing system for Konohagakure. With his brother Hashirama as the First Hokage, Tobirama worked tirelessly to create a stable and organized village. He implemented an organized system that included the formation of various administrative and military positions, such as the ANBU Black Ops and the Academy.

Tobirama’s commitment to protecting the village extended beyond its borders. He executed numerous missions to defend Konohagakure from external threats and preserve the village’s security. As Konohagakure grew, Tobirama considered the importance of forming alliances and maintaining polite relations to promote peace and cooperation within the shinobi world.

Another significant aspect of Tobirama’s story was his dealings with the Uchiha clan. He was aware of the tensions and conflicts that could arise between the Senju and Uchiha. So he sought to find ways to maintain harmony. Tobirama tried to bridge the gap between the two clans by developing understanding and unity among their members.

Upon Sasuke Uchiha’s request, Orochimaru releases the souls of the first four Hokage from the Shinigami’s stomach and reincarnates them. The revived Hokage learns of Sasuke’s plan to destroy Konoha, which makes Tobirama feel justified in his treatment of the Uchiha and ready to attack Sasuke. However, Hashirama intervenes and prevents Tobirama from taking action. They are then informed about Madara Uchiha’s reincarnation and his involvement in the ongoing Fourth Shinobi World War. Despite attempts to reason with Tobirama, he remains stubborn and only Orochimaru’s refined control over the Impure World Reincarnation keeps him in check. Hashirama shares his personal experiences with Madara and the Uchiha, and the other Hokage also add their own insights. Listening to their stories, Sasuke decides that he no longer wants to destroy Konoha.

Tobirama arrives shortly after Minato and complements his speed. The Hokage collaborate to erect a barrier around the Ten-Tails. Tobirama remains with the barrier to maintain its activation while observing Sasuke and the Allies as they engage the Ten-Tails.

When Obito Uchiha appears and prepares to revive Madara, Tobirama creates two shadow clones to confront Madara. However, Obito seals the Ten-Tails within himself, becoming its jinchūriki. With his newfound power, Obito breaks down the barrier. Tobirama, Minato, Sasuke, and Naruto coordinate their efforts using the Flying Thunder God Mutually Instantaneous Revolving Technique to attack Obito, but he emerges unaffected. Following Obito’s defeat and the removal of the Ten-Tails from his body, Madara is successfully revived. Tobirama launches a desperate attack to stop Madara but is caught by Madara’s black receivers. Despite being pinned down, Tobirama uses his Heavenly Weeping jutsu to distract Madara while Sasuke strikes from behind. Together, they defeat Madara and Kaguya. As Tobirama’s soul ascends to the afterlife, he encourages Hashirama to trust in Sasuke and Naruto to shape the future.

He grew up during a chaotic era of ceaseless conflict, which exposed him to the harsh realities of battle from a tender age. During a war between the Senju and Uchiha Clan, Tobirama confronted Izuna Uchiha who was Madara’s younger brother. When Izuna used the power of Sharingan and Fire Style Jutsu, Tobirama utilized Water Style Jutsu to counter his attack. The clash between the flames of Fire and Water Style Jutsu gave rise to smoke. Tobirama saw this as an opportunity and threw some kunai toward Izuna to distract him. Being over-confident about possessing Sharingan, Izuna laid his guard down. It was the time when Tobirama attacked him with Flying Raijin Slice, stabbing Izuna with his sword. This fatal attack severely injured Izuna, so Madara came to rescue his brother. Madara used a smoke bomb, and they both retreated from the battlefield.

Tobirama and his elder brother Hashirama engaged in battle with the Third Hokage when Orochimaru summoned them using Edo Tensei. As Orochimaru’s reanimation jutsu was incomplete, both Tobirama and Hashirama were possessing 20% of their original strength in reanimated form. However, they had the advantage of infinite Chakra and instant regeneration. The Third Hokage, being an excellent shinobi, fought both of them at the same time and gave them good competition. In the end, The Third Hokage used Ripper Seal Technique and extracted the soul from the resurrected bodies. Afterward, the bodies of Tobirama and his brother Hashirama were turned into ashes. This was the first Hokage-level fight that fans witnessed in the series.

Tobirama and the other previous Hokage of the Hidden Leaf Village were brought back to life during the Fourth Great Ninja War. Like before, the person who summoned them was Orochimaru, but this time he did it so that Sasuke can have a discussion with them. As soon as the discussion was over, all of them, including Tobirama, headed to the battlefield of the Fourth Great Ninja War to aid the Great Shinobi Alliance. Tobirama Senju fought and contributed during this war with his exceptional combat skills, strategic thinking, and leadership abilities. His efforts in guiding the Allied Shinobi Forces, countering Uchiha techniques, and inspiring his comrades were effective against Madara and Obito Uchiha.

Tobirama had a tense relationship with the Uchiha clan, particularly due to their Sharingan abilities and the challenges they posed to his leadership as the Second Hokage. This complex dynamic resulted in conflicts and tensions between Tobirama and Uchiha members throughout his lifetime. Though Tobirama hoped that the establishment of the Konoha Military Police Force would redirect the Uchiha’s focus toward the village, he was not surprised when they interpreted it as an insult. The Uchiha’s discontent eventually led to a planned coup against Konoha, which resulted in their near-extinction. Despite this apparent bias against the Uchiha, Tobirama remained open to cooperating with any Uchiha who could overcome the “Curse of Hatred.”

As a leader of the Senju clan, Tobirama faced opposition and rivalries from other powerful clans seeking dominance and control. His actions and decisions often brought him into conflict with these rival clans. Due to the unpredictable nature of the shinobi world, Tobirama developed a cautious and somewhat distrustful nature, especially towards rival clans and external forces. He believed in carefully assessing potential risks and taking precautionary measures to ensure the village’s safety.

Tobirama’s closest and most trusted ally was his elder brother Hashirama. Together, they founded the village of Konohagakure and worked tirelessly to establish peace and stability. Tobirama respected Hashirama’s leadership and shared a deep bond with him. Whenever Hashirama became overly optimistic, Tobirama would step in to offer a more realistic perspective, aiming to find practical alternatives to achieve their goals. Hashirama would sometimes be disappointed with Tobirama’s intervention, but he usually accepted his brother’s guidance without much protest. However, there were occasions when Hashirama pushed back against Tobirama, especially when Tobirama’s methods became too forceful. Hashirama’s rare displays of anger were enough to make Tobirama reconsider his approach.

While Tobirama and Minato Namikaze, the Fourth Hokage, had a relatively brief meeting, they shared a great rapport. Their mutual respect developed from their similar ability to act immediately and logically during battles. Despite their contrasting personalities, Tobirama found amusement in Minato’s behaviors, such as his elaborate names for techniques, like the “Spiralling Flash Super Round Dance Howl Style Three.”

Tobirama felt more frustrated than anything else when it came to Minato’s son, Naruto Uzumaki. Naruto failed to address Tobirama with the proper honor and did not recognize him as the creator of certain jutsu, such as the Flying Thunder God Technique, instead recognizing it as Minato’s invention.

As the Second Hokage, Tobirama had the respect and loyalty of the shinobi of Konohagakure. He built a strong network of allies within the village, who fought alongside him and carried out his orders with dedication. Tobirama strongly believed in the Will of Fire, which emphasized that all villagers of Konoha were part of one big family. As Hokage, his primary responsibility was to protect this family, and anyone who posed a threat to Konoha would witness Tobirama’s fierce rage, which was rarely seen in the series. Tobirama modeled his leadership style after both Hashirama and Madara Uchiha, aiming to strike a balance between Hashirama’s idealism and Madara’s inhumanity in order to safeguard the village.

During combat, he typically wore blue armor with a unique white fur collar, which he wore over a simple black suit. The armor consisted of numerous metal plates, providing protective guards for various parts of his body. Additionally, he wore extra shoulder guards on each arm, positioned beneath his shoulder armor. Completing his attire were sandals and a happuri, a forehead protector, which replaced the traditional one. Initially, the happuri featured the emblem of the Senju clan, but it was later replaced with Konoha’s symbol.

Tobirama was widely recognized as one of the most powerful shinobi in history, even earning praise from his rivals. Danzō Shimura, himself a powerful ninja, acknowledged that Tobirama’s skills and abilities were unmatched during his time as Hokage. Tobirama was proficient in all five basic nature transformations: Fire, Water, Wind, Earth, and Lightning. Additionally, he also had command over the advanced techniques of Yin Release and Yang Release

One of Tobirama’s notable abilities was his exceptional sensory perception. By touching the ground with his finger, he could accurately detect the presence and location of targets in the surrounding area. His sensory skills extended beyond close range, allowing him to sense individuals from faraway locations and identify their lineage through their chakra signatures. He even had the ability to pinpoint the exact location of a target, even when blinded. Furthermore, Tobirama was skilled in barrier ninjutsu, which involves creating protective barriers or enclosures using chakra.

During his lifetime, Tobirama was renowned as the fastest shinobi. He could move swiftly to plant explosive tags on targets or mark them for his Space-Time Ninjutsu without being detected. In the anime, Tobirama moved fast even underwater. In addition to his speed, Tobirama was highly skilled in taijutsu, able to compete against his former student Hiruzen, who was a master of all shinobi disciplines. Tobirama had significant chakra reserves, enough to teleport two users in Tailed Beast Mode simultaneously and exert enough power to visibly affect the surrounding environment. With exceptional chakra control, he was able to execute complex techniques with just a single hand seal.

In battle, Tobirama was a calculated and strategic fighter, choosing his moments to strike with utmost confidence and without showing mercy. He was highly innovative, developing a range of original and advanced techniques such as the Impure World Reincarnation, Flying Thunder God Technique, and Shadow Clone Technique. Tobirama was known for launching surprise attacks. He possessed a keen eye for detail and analyzed every aspect of a battle, carefully studying his opponents’ strategies and techniques to uncover their purpose, mechanics, and weaknesses. Furthermore, Tobirama displayed extensive knowledge beyond his own training, recognizing various creatures like the toads from Mount Myōboku and their senjutsu, as well as identifying different types of advanced nature transformations.

Water Release Jutsu

Tobirama Senju possessed an exceptional mastery over Water Release. He was able to generate large amounts of water even in the absence of a nearby water source. This feat required significant skill and control. He could throw high-pressure streams of water from his mouth, slicing through targets with precision. Additionally, he had the capability to shape the water into needle-like projectiles, which were effective in targeting the vital points of opponents. Tobirama could also create defensive walls and summon immense water dragons, all without relying on pre-existing sources of water. In the anime, Tobirama was seen covering an entire battlefield in water.

Flying Thunder God Technique

It is commonly known that Tobirama was skilled in a number of space-time ninjutsu. He could instantly teleport himself and/or other targets to any place marked with his seal or associated with his chakra by using the Flying Thunder God Technique. Tobirama has also been able to monitor a battlefield by using other people’s chakra as a source for his method by connecting his chakra with theirs. He can teleport any number of people away from danger when several people share this chakra. Tobirama has access to other practitioners’ Flying Thunder God seals if he connects his chakra to them. Also, he could use their designated regions or utilize their marked kunai to quickly travel inside an area by connecting his chakra to people who knew the method. By tactically striking at key points, he was able to catch opponents off guard and prevent them from reacting in time.

Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation

Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation, invented by Tobirama, had the ability to bring back deceased souls and bind them to immortal, regenerating bodies. However, it came with certain drawbacks and limitations. To make use of the revived bodies’ unique attributes, Tobirama developed the Mutually Multiplying Explosive Tags. He employed these tags in kamikaze-like attacks, triggering a chain reaction of near-infinite explosions on a target. This tactic allowed him to clear a wide area with destructible force. However, it should be noted that Tobirama never fully refined this technique. He had limited control over a small number of reincarnated bodies at once, and their power was low compared to alive ones. Despite its immense potential and the advantages it provided in battle, Tobirama recognized the dangers and ethical concerns associated with the Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation. As a responsible shinobi, he labeled it as a forbidden jutsu, understanding the risks it posed if fallen into the wrong hands or used without caution.

Shadow Clones

Shadow Clones were developed as a countermeasure against the Sharingan, as the Sharingan has the ability to distinguish between clones and the original shinobi. However, Shadow Clones present a unique challenge to the Sharingan because they possess identical chakra pathways, making it difficult for the Sharingan to find the difference between the real shinobi and their clones. Similarly, the Byakugan, which is known for its exceptional vision, is also unable to differentiate between Shadow Clones. However, Madara Uchiha, possessing the Rinnegan, could differentiate between Shadow Clones.

  • Tobirama knew a wide range of jutsu and skills, making him a versatile fighter. He was proficient in Water Release ninjutsu, space-time ninjutsu, taijutsu, and had a strong command over the summoning technique.
  • Tobirama was known for his exceptional intelligence and strategic thinking. He could quickly assess a situation, formulate effective battle plans, and adapt his strategies to counter his opponents.

Due to the historical conflicts between the Senju and Uchiha clans, Tobirama developed a deep-seated distrust towards members of the Uchiha clan. This bias could sometimes cloud his judgment and influence his interactions with Uchiha individuals.

In terms of weaponry, Tobirama showcased his swordsmanship skills. He was skilled enough to engage in battles against Izuna Uchiha, demonstrating his proficiency with a sword. In the anime, he even mastered wielding the Sword of the Thunder God, a unique blade with electrical abilities.

Hiruzen gets ready to sacrifice his life, but Tobirama refuses his decision and decides to become a decoy himself. Before leaving for the battle, he imparts some lessons to Danzou and declares Hiruzen the Third Hokage. The Kinkaku Unit, led by Kinkaku, consisted of 20 highly skilled S-Rank shinobi. Notably, Kinkaku possessed the weapons of the Sage of Six Paths and had obtained fragments of the power of the Nine-Tailed Fox, the Kyuubi. Kinkaku could tap into the powers of the Kyuubi and enter its second stage, known as the tailed beast cloak. Thus, it required a powerful force of 20 S-Rank ninjas, led by Kinkaku, who possessed the second stage-tailed beast cloak and wielded the weapons of Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki, to eliminate one of the strongest ninjas Tobirama Senju.

During the invasion of Konoha by Orochimaru and his forces, Tobirama along with his brother was reincarnated using the Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation technique. As a tool under Orochimaru’s control, he fought against his former student Hiruzen. Due to the incomplete reincarnation process, Tobirama and his brother were possessing only 20% of their original power. Despite not being at their original powers, both brothers fought excellently. However, in the end, his body turned into dust, marking the end of his temporary return.

Eventually, as the war progressed and the enemy forces grew stronger, Tobirama’s time on the battlefield reached its limit. He began to feel the effects of the Impure World Reincarnation, and his body slowly started to disintegrate.

  • Through his leadership and guidance, Tobirama significantly contributed to the prosperity and growth of the Hidden Leaf Village, solidifying its status as a major power in the shinobi world. One of his notable achievements was his strategic decision to sell tailed beasts to other villages rather than giving them away for free, as his brother Hashirama had initially suggested. This move allowed the Hidden Leaf to accumulate wealth and resources, strengthening its position among other villages. Furthermore, he established the Leaf Police, responsible for maintaining law and order within the village, and created the Chunin Exams, which served as a platform for young shinobi to showcase their skills and advance in rank. Tobirama also founded the ANBU, an elite group of highly skilled and secretive shinobi, and established the Academy to provide education and training to young aspiring ninjas.
  • Tobirama Senju possessed exceptional sensory abilities, surpassing most shinobi in his capability to detect and analyze chakra. His sensory skills were so advanced that he could perceive the chakra presence of individuals located far kilometers away. Also, he could tell a person’s lineage or ancestry by analyzing their chakra. Even in situations where his physical vision was impaired, Tobirama’s sensory prowess remained unparalleled. This proved to be instrumental when he and his team found themselves surrounded by the Kinkaku squad.
  • Tobirama Senju’s mastery of all five nature transformations, including Water Release, showcased his exceptional skill as a shinobi. His proficiency in Water Release, in particular, granted him a significant advantage in battles and strategic encounters. This versatility proved valuable, especially when facing opponents who specialized in Fire Release, such as members of the Uchiha clan.

  • Tobirama Senju was credited with the development of the Space-Time ninjutsu known as the Flying Thunder God Technique. This technique involved the usage of special seals that allowed Tobirama to teleport himself or others instantly to any location marked with his seal or connected to his chakra. The Flying Thunder God Technique was particularly effective as a countermeasure against the Sharingan. Tobirama used the Flying Thunder God Technique to defeat Izuna Uchiha, the younger brother of Madara Uchiha.
  • A Hokage in the Naruto series is depicted wearing a traditional triangular hat known as a Hokage hat, it is worth noting that Tobirama Senju, the Second Hokage, is rarely seen wearing this hat in the anime. The absence of the Hokage hat on Tobirama can be interpreted in different ways. One possible explanation is that it symbolizes his practical approach to his duties as Hokage. Tobirama’s lack of emphasis on outward symbols of status, such as the Hokage hat, could reflect his humble nature and his preference for taking action and getting things done rather than seeking personal recognition.
  • Tobirama’s given name, “Tobirama,” is composed of the kanji characters “tobira” (扉) and “ma” (間). “Tobira” means “doors” and can symbolize progress, opportunity, and new beginnings. The character “ma” represents the space or interval between two objects. Together, his name can be interpreted as “the space between two doors.” This can be seen as a metaphor for Tobirama’s role in leading Konoha toward a brighter future. As for his surname, “Senju,” it is composed of the kanji characters “sen” (千) and “ju” (手). “Sen” means “thousand,” and “ju” translates to “hands.” The name “Senju” can be understood as “thousand hands.” This can be interpreted in a couple of ways. Firstly, it reflects the Senju clan’s emphasis on cooperation and unity. Secondly, it signifies the exceptional strength and prowess of clan members. The strength of a single Senju member is said to be comparable to that of a thousand-average ninja.
  • Many people are familiar with Tobirama’s older brother, Hashirama. However, some fans might not be aware that he had two other brothers, Kawarama and Itama. Sadly, both Kawarama and Itama died at a young age while fighting in battles.

  • The symbol of the Senju Clan is derived from the Vajra, a significant symbol and ritual object in Buddhist and Hindu traditions. It combines the qualities of a diamond, symbolizing indestructibility, and a thunderbolt, representing irresistible force. In Buddhism, the Vajra also signifies the unwavering strength of one’s spirit and spiritual power. Considering the immense strength and unwavering dedication of the Senju clan, including Tobirama, the Vajra symbol is well-suited to represent their characteristics.
  • Following the tragic death of seven-year-old Kawarama, their father Butsuma claimed that he had died honorably in battle. However, Hashirama, and likely Tobirama as well, believed that his sacrifice had been in vain. On the other hand, Itama expressed concern about seeking revenge for their fallen family members, a notion that Tobirama believed should be suppressed.
  • Tobirama makes a cameo appearance in an omake, a lighthearted extra segment, featured at the end of Naruto Shippuden Episode 129. In this omake, his face can be seen depicted in a fireworks display, along with the faces of other former Hokage such as Minato and Hashirama.
  • In the English dubbed version of the Naruto series, Tobirama is voiced by Peter Lurie in Part I and Jamieson Price in Part II. Interestingly, this is opposite to the voice casting for Hashirama. In Part I, Peter Lurie voices Tobirama while Jamieson Price voices Hashirama. However, in Part II, their roles are switched, with Jamieson Price voicing Tobirama and Peter Lurie voicing Hashirama.
  • Tobirama developed a deep mistrust towards the Uchiha clan, even after they became allies. He linked this mistrust to the Uchiha Clan’s Curse of Hatred, which conflicted with the Senju Clan’s Will of Fire. Tobirama’s lack of trust in the Uchiha clan contradicted the very essence of the Will of Fire, which emphasizes that the entire village is a family that must protect one another.
  • Tobirama trained numerous ninjas during his time, but among them, only two of his students are still alive in the series and hold the position of village elders. These individuals are Homura Mitokado and Koharu Utatane. They have become respected figures within the village and play important roles in advising and making decisions for the Hidden Leaf.

  • When it came to determining the leadership of the village, Tobirama advocated for a democratic process, which involved giving the people the power to choose their leader. Despite his own capabilities and qualifications, Tobirama insisted that his elder brother Hashirama Senju participate in this democratic selection. As a result, the people overwhelmingly chose Hashirama as their leader. Even the Uchiha Clan placed their faith in Hashirama rather than their own member, Madara Uchiha.
