Franky was originally named Cutty Flam by his real parents who used to be Pirates and had discarded him into the ocean at a very young age. He was rescued by Tom, a legendary shipbuilder who made him his apprentice after seeing his natural talent for building machinery out of scrap.

Tom was the father figure of Franky who taught him everything about being a good shipwright. He was sentenced to death for building the ship Oro Jackson which was the vessel for the King Of Pirates, Gol D Roger. He was able to redeem himself by building the Puffing Tom train but was framed after 14 years by the Government and he ended up dying while protecting Franky from being framed by the government.

Love Interest- Girlfriend

In terms of Franky’s love life, the character doesn’t have a romantic partner or a significant romantic storyline in the One Piece series. Franky’s focus primarily lies in his role as a shipwright and his dedication to the Straw Hat Pirates. Franky’s character is more focused on his friendships and his quest to protect and support his chosen family. His interactions with other characters are often based on friendship, camaraderie, and shared goals rather than romantic connections.

Background

After getting abandoned by his family, Franky was taken under the wing of Tom who made him his apprentice along with Iceburg to train in becoming a good shipbuilder and craftsman after seeing him create a cannon out of waste scarps. As Cutty Flam was a weird name, Iceburg eventually gave Cutty Flam the new name “Franky.” The majority of Franky’s time was devoted to building battleships with the names “Battle Franky” and numbers related to the order of construction.

When Franky was 26 years old, the prevailing CP5 leader, Spandam, had him set up. Spandam was after the design blueprints for the ancient weapon Pluton, which Tom had inherited from the shipwrights of Water 7. Spandam attacked Water 7 with the warships that Franky had constructed to combat the Sea Kings, and even though Tom and his apprentices prevented the attack, everyone thought that they had been the ones attacking. Tom received a death sentence as a result for which Franky attacked Spandam in the face with a gun as he took away Tom. Later, he stood in front of Puffing Tom and attempted to save Tom which resulted in Franky’s body being severely damaged when he was struck by the train, and he was initially thought to be dead.

After nearly escaping death, he was able to repair himself using spare parts from an abandoned ship, and he became the 36th “Battle Franky” by getting “BF 36” tattooed on his shoulders. After 4 years of staying hidden, he went to meet Iceburg who gave him the blueprints for Ancient Weapon Pluto which he took with him, and went to Backstreets where he defeated a mafia group and became their new leader. Then, when he discovered Kiwi and Mozu drinking in the middle of the day, he dragged them away for some cola and enlisted them as his followers. Later, the Franky Family was later established thereafter and he rose to become the undercover mafia boss of Water 7.

Inspired By/Based On

Franky has been majorly inspired by the actor Jim Carrey from his movies like Ace Venture. Most of the hairstyles for Franky drew inspiration from Jim’s look around his career in the movies.

For the physical appearance, Echiiro Oda drew inspiration from the Cyborg theme as Franky’s cyborg nature along with his ability to transform his body parts into various weapons draw inspiration from the concept of cyborgs and mechanized characters commonly found in science fiction and superhero genres and pop culture references. Franky’s flamboyant appearance, eccentric personality, and fashion sense reflect elements of punk and rock culture. Franky’s bulging muscles, love for cola (his preferred drink), and signature pose are reminiscent of the classic cartoon character Popeye the Sailor Man. Like Popeye who used to eat spinach, Franky gains incredible strength and energy from consuming cola, which enhances his impressive physical abilities.

Development

As the leader of “The Franky Family,” a crew of thugs, Franky was introduced as a negative character before he crossed paths with the Straw Hats. His gang of outcasts ambushed and almost killed Usopp while stealing the 200,000,000 Berries he was carrying. This made the Straw Hat crew mad and they attacked the Franky House and destroyed it along with the thugs. While fighting the same enemy and getting to know the truth, Franky redeemed himself by helping Luffy and his crew to rescue Robin.

After a long battle at the Enies Lobby, Franky used the money to buy Adam Wood which he used to build the ship for Straw Hat Crew and named it Thousand Sunny. He built this ship to watch it sail across the Grand Line just like his former master’s ship. He became a part of the Straw Hat Crew as the shipwright in order to sail the seas along with his ship. He played a major role in the story of One Piece and fought many difficult battles which led to the survival of the crew.

He learned everything possible for improving his worth as a craftsman in order to help the crew. After a drastic change from a bad person to a soft-hearted and caring friend to his crew, Franky has fought many battles throughout the series to prove his loyalty to Luffy and wants to watch him sail to the last island Raftel (Laugh Tale). After the events at Enies Lobby, Franky became wanted and was given a bounty.

Franky holds a particularly deep resentment against Spandam because he accused Iceburg, Tom, and Franky of being involved in the attack on the Judicial ship. After ten years, they finally ran into one other at Enies Lobby, where Franky fiercely attacked Spandam right on his face because he had made fun of Tom. He later foils Spandam’s intentions to seize control during the Enies Lobby Arc by crushing Pluton and destroying his blueprints as retaliation.

Friends/Allies/Comrades

Iceburg was the second apprentice of Tom along with Franky who used to learn shipbuilding together. Iceburg changed the name from Cutty Flam to Franky because he thought his real name was weird. Both of them shared a very special bond since childhood and keep fighting amongst each other while calling stupid or morons to each other. After being hit by the Sea Train, Iceburg was so glad to discover that Franky was still alive and broke down in tears. Franky, however, was furious with CP9 for telling him that Iceburg was purportedly dead. By collaborating with the Straw Hats and eventually providing Franky with the proper guidance, Iceburg was able to relieve Franky of his duty as the guardian of Water 7 while enabling him to move on with his life by joining the Straw Hats to pursue his actual dream.

Kokoro served as a grandmother to him and Iceburg during their time as Tom’s apprentice. Kokoro was concerned for Franky’s welfare and was upset when she assumed he had died after being run over by the Puffing Tom after Tom’s imprisonment and Franky’s unsuccessful attempt to save him. Along with Kokoro, Yokozuna was a highly loyal friend to Franky. He had developed a habit of challenging the Sea Train in order to become stronger so he wouldn’t lose any more loved ones. When he learned of his old friend Franky’s situation from old lady Kokoro, who was desperate to keep Franky alive, he joined the Straw Hats and the Franky Family to rescue the captured Franky during the Water 7 Arc.

Frank founded the Franky Family to care for the misfits and rejects of Water 7, including Zambai, despite them not being connected to him by blood. They refer to one another as “sister” or “brother” because of their close bond and they are the misfits of Water 7, individuals who failed the entrance exam to become shipwrights but still wanted to work for Iceburg in the Galley-La Corporation so they were left with little choice but choose to turn to Franky, who also views himself as somewhat of a failure.

Once Franky got to Fish-Man Island, he immediately started searching for Tom’s family members and discovered Den (Tom’s Brother). They interacted nicely and Den was first observed discussing Tom with Franky on the Thousand Sunny. Den praises Franky on the ship he constructed and offers to coat it. He says that letters from Kokoro are the reason he found out about Iceburg and Franky.

Once Kuma threw Franky to Karakuri island, where he instantly made friends with a boy named Kitton, his cyborg dog named Taroimo, and his Grandfather. They all had different opinions about Franky, as the boy found him cool and loved his style while his Grandfather had a weird feeling and didn’t like his behavior. Irrespective of their feelings, they bore with his decision and helped him out in every way possible.

Due to a large part of Franky’s involvement in the theft of his crewmate during the Water 7 Arc, Monkey D Luffy did not like Franky at first. Franky also felt resentment towards Luffy for destroying his home and attacking his gang. Franky, though, came to appreciate Luffy for opposing him. When Franky finished building the Thousand Sunny, Luffy was adamant that he join his crew, mainly because he had built the Thousand Sunny specifically for them. Luffy considers Franky to be the embodiment of a “boy’s dream” and is frequently in wonder about his shipbuilding prowess and cyborg enhancements. Franky acts as Luffy’s big brother.

Roronoa Zoro didn’t like Franky at first due to his behavior with Usopp at Water 7 but later they both bonded well and became friends. Zoro usually gets annoyed and angry at Franky’s weird habits such as crying and making dumb comments over various things. Franky has defined Zoro as an easily provoked pirate with three swords, although he has also acknowledged his strength as formidable, considering him one of the strongest fighters in the crew. Zoro has also suggested that Zoro should start calling him “Bro” as he helped rescue him, something that an enraged Zoro and he abruptly rejects.

Nami has referred to Franky as a “perverse freak,” which Franky considered as a complement because he tends to treat her like a little sister while she also refers to him as big bro. Nami has also admitted that she doesn’t take her robotic abilities seriously, saying that she would rather die than perform robotic functions like firing beams. She frequently makes fun of Franky’s stranger warfare creations, which tend to attract young guys. She usually finds Franky’s childish characteristics annoying, but she admires his abilities as a shipwright and a fighter. She was very appreciative of him for creating the Mini Merry II since it made her remember Going Merry.

Franky’s relationship with Usopp had its ups and downs throughout the series. Initially, Franky and Usopp had a bit of a rocky start during the events in Water 7 with Franky beating up Usopp to steal his money and threaten the Straw Hats. However, their relationship underwent a significant change after various events at the Enies Lobby where they both started to bond well. They both respect each other for their creations and mastery in crafting weapons and machines along with the idea of Pirate Docking 6.

Initially, Sanji had a negative opinion of Franky when they first encountered each other aboard the Puffing Tom and he expressed his dislike by delivering a kick to Franky’s face. But once Franky joined the crew, his perspective on him began to change. When Franky built the Thousand Sunny, the kitchen it included greatly impressed Sanji and earned Franky some respect from him. Sanji can sometimes become irritated by some of Franky’s eccentric behaviors, particularly his tendency to cry easily when hearing sad stories. Sanji recognizes and appreciates Franky’s skills as a shipwright and similarly, Franky acknowledges Sanji’s strength as one of the crew’s most formidable fighters.

When Chopper first encountered Franky at Enies Lobby, he was initially frightened by his appearance and found his cola-powered abilities to be silly. However, Chopper’s opinion of Franky quickly changed when he witnessed the fascinating hairstyle-changing feature of Franky’s body. Chopper began to see him as someone who was genuinely enjoyable to be around and was easily amazed and impressed by Franky’s robotic attributes and inventive creations. Initially, Franky had difficulty identifying Chopper’s species and mistakenly referred to him as a gorilla. Franky often gives Chopper shoulder rides and even allows him to relax on his head.

Franky and Robin get along well ever since he realized her situation and has said that it was not wrong for her to exist. They collaborated to take down Spandam as they both shared a dislike for him. Later, she made him join the crew by grasping his crotch, irrespective of his distress and extreme pain. Also, once she threatened to never forgive him for making strange faces while inside Chopper’s body since she found it disturbing. Franky hates Robin’s unusual custom of discussing potential outcomes using repulsive or gruesome facts.

However, as their journey continued, Franky’s perspective on Brook underwent a significant change. His curiosity led him to question Brook about his past, and upon hearing his tragic story, Franky developed a sense of respect for the undead musician. Franky’s surprise turned into delight when he reunited with Brook and learned that he had willingly forsaken his fame and embraced his place within the Straw Hat crew.

Outfits

Franky has always been criticized by the One Piece characters for being a “pervert” who doesn’t wear pants irrespective of the place he is at.  Before the time skip, Franky simply used to wear a Hawaii pattern-like shirt, with a pair of underwear and a gold chain around his neck. He called his body model BF-36 which was based upon the names he used to give to his ships, Battle Franky.

After the 2-year time skip, Franky’s body underwent major changes which changed his physical body completely. He names it BF-37 which depicted a change in his previous model. By pressing his nose for longer than three seconds, Franky is able to instantly change the style of his hair using the Franky Salon technique. Earlier he used to wear his hair up in a pompadour, but now he can constantly switch it up, usually whenever he puts on a new suit. He still wears anything he finds on his upper body with nothing for the legs except his love for his classic underwear style.

Transformations

BF-38/General Franky: With a height of 13 meters, Iron Pirate, General Franky is a massive mech suit manufactured by the superalloy Wapometal. It is a one-person weapon/vehicle that is modeled like its name, a shogun, and Franky is able to pilot it inside a control room in the chest and operate it from there. It could withstand a direct missile strike that only succeeded in collapsing it without doing any harm. His “Shogun Franky” robot can also perform an attack called “General Cannon” whose assault resembles both his Coup de Vent and Franky Radical Beam, unleashing a powerful blast of compressed air at his foe. Franky describes this attack’s force as that of Thousand Sunny’s “Gaon Cannon,” and it can also offer defense against any outside forces.

Powers

Since Franky is a cyborg, most attacks have no effect on his heavily armed and shielded front body. Along with the many weaponry around his body, he also has a refrigerator section in his stomach that can store three bottles of cola to power his hits. The kind of beverage that is kept in his refrigerator compartment also has an impact on his personality. He can instantly consume a lot of Cola to launch strong airbursts from his arms, to use the impact the blow away enemies.

In addition to his built-in capabilities, Franky has incorporated various gadgets and weapons into his body. These include:

  • Coup De Vent: This weapon utilizes compressed air as a powerful projectile. By rapidly accumulating air within a confined space and releasing it, Franky can unleash devastating attacks capable of toppling large structures.

Reviews and Receptions

One Piece fans have numerous reasons for loving Franky, as he has garnered a significant following due to his unique personality and memorable traits.

  • Charismatic Personality: Franky’s larger-than-life personality, with his crazy laughter, eccentric mannerisms, and over-the-top style, makes him a captivating character. Fans are drawn to his energetic and confident attitude, which brings a sense of fun and excitement to the series.
  • Unique Design and Appearance: Franky’s distinctive appearance, with his large build, shaved head, and cyborg enhancements, sets him apart from other characters in One Piece. His flamboyant fashion choices, including his signature Speedo and Hawaiian shirt, make him instantly recognizable and add to his charm reminding fans of Jim Carrey and Popeye the Sailor Man.
  • Heart Touching Backstory: Franky’s backstory, which delves into his past as a member of Tom’s Workers and his relationship with his mentor, Tom, evokes sympathy and resonates with fans. His transformation from a troubled youth to a reliable ally and member of the Straw Hat Pirates adds depth to his character and makes him relatable to many viewers.
  • Memorable Catchphrases and Expressions: Franky is known for his catchy catchphrases, such as “SUPER!” and “SUUUUUPERRR,” which have become iconic and endearing to fans. His enthusiastic exclamations and unique manner of speaking contribute to his likability and make him a fan favorite.

While Franky has a significant fan following, there are also some criticisms directed toward his character in One Piece such as :

  • Extremely Perverted Choices: As a part of his nature, Franky never likes to wear lowers and exposes most of his body irrespective of the place he is at. This gives him an extremely negative side from various fans who want to watch a character behave while being around women. He also uses the phrase “Hentai” (meaning pervert) while performing certain changes and appreciates it when someone calls him a pervert person.
  • Changes after Time Skip: The cool look of Franky loved by most of the fans was downgraded in the series after the 2 year time skip where he was changed from a funky cyborg to a robot-like man with an overgrown body and mature behavior. Many fans hated the change made to him and wanted it to be reverted back to the original design.

  • Wrong message for audiences to drink Cola: As a character loved by people of every age, the habit of Franky promoting the use of Cola for gaining strength feels wrong as it encourages kids to have such a beverage which has a negative impact on their health and body.
