Upon the request of Sasuke Uchiha, Orochimaru releases the souls of the first four Hokage from the Shinigami’s stomach to reincarnate them. The Hokages are informed about the ongoing Fourth Shinobi World War and the resurrection of Madara Uchiha. Although Orochimaru has improved his control over the Impure World Reincarnation, Hashirama possesses enough strength to break free if he desires. However, instead of doing so, Hashirama chooses to reveal to Sasuke the history of Konoha and the Uchiha clan, which is the main reason he was brought back to life. After learning about Hashirama’s history and reflecting on his own experiences, Sasuke decides that he does not want Konoha to be destroyed. Orochimaru releases the Hokage from his control, and they join forces to protect Konoha. They head to the battlefield where the Allied Shinobi Forces are fighting against the Ten-Tails. Hashirama enters Sage Mode and uses Sage Art: Gate of the Great God to bind the Ten-Tails, while also assisting the other Hokage in creating a barrier to contain it. Due to his role in maintaining the barrier, Hashirama creates five wood clones to act on his behalf. Four of the clones lead the Allied attack against the Ten-Tails’ minions, while the fifth engages Madara. However, Madara is not interested in fighting the clone and prefers to wait until the real Hashirama is available. In response, Hashirama creates six additional wood clones to confront Madara and stop him.

They are visited by the spirit of the Sage of the Six Paths, who seek their assistance. Alongside the spirits of the other deceased Kage, they summon Team 7, Madara, and the tailed beasts back from Kaguya’s dimension. Hashirama and the other Kage are later returned to the Pure Land by the Sage of Six Paths. As his soul disappears, Hashirama wishes Sasuke and Naruto good luck, expressing his hope that they will have a better relationship than he and Madara did.

Due to his vast chakra reserves and proficiency in Senjutsu, Hashirama could enter Sage Mode almost instantaneously. When in Sage Mode, distinct red (or black in the anime) markings would appear beneath and around his eyes, as well as on his forehead. This transformation also enhanced his Wood Release abilities, resulting in his constructs growing in size and becoming more powerful. Notably, he could create his largest and most destructible technique, the Sage Art Wood Release: True Several Thousand Hands. With this technique, Hashirama unleashed a massive barrage of punches capable of overpowering even the Nine-Tails’ Susanoo.

Hashirama was a master of all five fundamental nature transformations, including the Yin and Yang Release. However, he became renowned for his Wood Release, a unique kekkei genkai that combined earth and water-based chakra. With this power, he could generate wood and plants of different sizes and forms, either from the surrounding environment or his own body. Wood Release was a rare ability, seemingly exclusive to Hashirama, as no other individuals were known to possess it naturally.

Also, Hashirama was highly proficient in taijutsu, the art of hand-to-hand combat. He possessed immense physical strength, speed, and flexibility.

As a member of the Senju clan and the reincarnation of Asura Ōtsutsuki, Hashirama possessed exceptional physical energy. This granted him an immense amount of chakra that was not only incredibly strong but also dense enough to impact his surroundings with powerful shockwaves when released. During the Fourth Shinobi World War, upon witnessing Naruto Uzumaki distribute his and the Nine-Tails’ chakra to the entire Allied Shinobi Forces, Hashirama commented that the amount of chakra shared was nearly equivalent to his own. He could perform complex and large-scale techniques with minimal or no need for hand seals. Additionally, he created create ten wood clones while simultaneously maintaining a Kage-level barrier.

Wood Release: Domed Wall

Wood Release: Domed Wall is a powerful technique that Hashirama uses. By channeling a significant amount of chakra into the ground, the user activates underground roots that rapidly emerge and form thick, wooden pillars on either side. These pillars then combine to create a protective dome around the user, offering a strong defense. One notable aspect of Hashirama’s Domed Wall is its ability to trap enemies within the dome. Its unique application of Wood Release, a kekkei genkai, grants Hashirama an ultimate defensive capability. Furthermore, this technique is capable to withstand powerful attacks. It has even been shown to deflect Naruto’s Tailed Beast Shockwave, a destructive attack that is capable of destroying entire mountains.

Wood Release: Laughing Buddha

The Wood Release: Laughing Buddha jutsu is a powerful technique that falls under the category of short to mid-range jutsu. It utilizes Hashirama’s Wood Release kekkei genkai. By clapping his hands together, Hashirama can create multiple gigantic wooden hands that emerge from the ground. These hands are often as large as Tailed Beasts, making them highly effective in restraining even the most powerful enemies. Hashirama has used the Laughing Buddha jutsu on several occasions throughout his life, with one notable instance being his attempt to control the Nine-Tailed Fox. With his immense skill, Hashirama can manifest at least two hands through sheer will alone. By performing hand signs, he can summon even more gigantic hands, reaching a total of approximately ten Tailed Beast-sized hands. The Laughing Buddha jutsu poses a significant threat even to the strongest Tailed Beasts. A single clap of this jutsu possesses the potential to destroy entire battlefields.

Elder Jutsu: Tenth Edict On Enlightenment

Hashirama developed the Hokage Style Elder Jutsu: Tenth Edict On Enlightenment for the purpose of suppressing the chakra of a jinchuriki, thus preventing them from undergoing a Tailed Beast transformation. After marrying Mito, who became the Nine-Tails jinchuriki, Hashirama utilized the unique chakra-draining ability of Wood Release to control Kurama’s influence. By creating ten wooden pillars and making physical contact with the tailed beast, this jutsu can restrain the Tailed Beast and prevent it from emerging. Hashirama was the sole individual capable of performing the Tenth Edict On Enlightenment as he was the only one with access to Wood Style. Throughout his lifetime, he used this technique to capture and distribute the remaining Tailed Beasts among the five Hidden Villages, ensuring a balance of power in the shinobi world. After receiving injections of Hashirama’s cells, Yamato could use this jinchuriki-binding jutsu. He frequently used it to prevent Naruto, the host of the Nine-Tails, from transforming into the powerful Tailed Beast within him.

Wood Release: Deep Forest Emergence

As the leader of the Senju clan, Hashirama frequently used his Wood Release ability for the benefit of his clan members. After establishing an alliance with the Uchiha clan, Hashirama was seen performing a technique called Wood Release: Deep Forest Emergence. This technique can instantaneously create a vast forest, which would later become the foundation of Konohagakure. The Deep Forest Emergence technique had multiple advantages. It could help prevent natural disasters such as deforestation by rapidly renewing the forested area. Additionally, Hashirama could use the dense trees of the forest to hide his presence from the enemies. The trees created through this technique could also be manipulated to bind enemy ninjas, suppress and absorb their chakra, or serve as strong obstacles to prevent Tailed Beasts from causing destruction within Konohagakure.

Wood Release: Deep Forest Bloom

Wood Release: Deep Forest Bloom is a variant of its parent technique, Deep Forest Emergence, used by Hashirama. Unlike Deep Forest Emergence, this technique generates forests consisting of flowering trees. As the flowers blossom, a dense cloud of special dust is released into the surrounding air. When enemies inhale this gas, they immediately lose consciousness. One distinct advantage of Deep Forest Bloom is that the user can manipulate the spread of this gas, ensuring that it only affects the intended targets while leaving themselves and their allies unaffected. Additionally, since the trees created by this technique are still under the user’s control, Hashirama can use Deep Forest Bloom to first make his enemies unconscious and then proceed to bind them completely, taking advantage of Wood Release’s chakra-absorbing capability. As a result, the targets are left defenseless and vulnerable. With the help of this technique, Hashirama could overpower entire villages with a single strike.

Summoning Technique: Quintuple Rashomon

The Summoning Technique: Quintuple Rashomon is a powerful jutsu that grants its user exceptional defensive capabilities. Unlike its parent technique, the Quintuple Rashomon allows the user to instantly summon five Rashomon gates simultaneously. These gates can be repositioned and manipulated to redirect incoming attacks or alter their trajectory. One remarkable aspect of the Quintuple Rashomon is its durability. Even when facing powerful attacks such as a Tailed Beast Ball combined with Susanno, the gates stand still. While Orochimaru created the Triple Rashomon using two summoning seals, Hashirama independently summoned the Quintuple Rashomon without the need for hand signs. The Fourth Shinobi Alliance owes their survival to Hashirama’s use of this jutsu. Without it, the entire army would have been at risk of annihilation.

Wood Golem jutsu

The Wood Golem jutsu is a technique that allows the user to create a massive humanoid construct made of wood. By performing the necessary hand signs, the user summons the Wood Golem, which is equipped with a Wood Dragon on its shoulder. The user can position themselves on top of the Golem’s head, using it as a battle avatar. The Wood Golem possesses incredible strength and size, comparable to that of a Tailed Beast. The Wood Dragon accompanying the Golem provides additional support, either acting as a long-range projectile or engaging in close combat alongside the Golem. During his battle against Madara Uchiha, Hashirama used the Wood Golem jutsu. Despite Madara’s Complete Body-Susanoo, Hashirama managed to defeat him using the immense strength of the Wood Golem. The power of Hashirama’s Wood Golem was said to be on par with that of the Nine-Tails, the strongest among the Tailed Beasts.

Sage Art: Gracious Deity Gates

The Sage Art: Gracious Deity Gates can be used while in Sage Mode. When activated, massive red torii gates descend from the sky and restrain the target, pinning them to the ground. This binding force is absolute, as it prevents the target from using its chakra. The size of the gates is proportional to the size of the target. Hashirama used the Sage Art: Gracious Deity Gates to control the Nine-Tailed Fox. The gates not only drained Kurama’s chakra but also suppressed its will to fight. During the Fourth Ninja War, Hashirama made use of Gracious Deity Gates again by completely immobilizing the Ten-Tails.

Sage Art: 1,000 Armed Kannon

In Sage Mode, the user of Wood Release can create an enormous statue known as the Sage Art: 1,000 Armed Kannon. This statue possesses a thousand separate hands and is capable of delivering a thousand simultaneous blows to the target. The user remains mobile and can continue to perform additional jutsu while the statue attacks. The power of the 1,000 Armed Kannon is immense, to the point that it could have been considered a forbidden jutsu (kinjutsu) if anyone other than Hashirama possessed the ability to use Wood Release. Not only does the giant statue launch attacks on its own, but its arms also retain the properties of Hashirama’s Wood Release technique, including manipulation and chakra absorption. While attacking his opponents with a barrage of wooden fists, Hashirama can absorb their chakra and bind them in place. This technique proved to be overwhelming even against powerful opponents like Madara Uchiha, who was riding atop the Nine-Tails within a Full Body-Susanoo.

Negative Reviews

  • While Hashirama is depicted as a powerful and influential character, some viewers feel that his abilities and achievements are somewhat overemphasized. His god-like status and seemingly unbeatable nature can undermine the tension and stakes of certain battles. • Hashirama’s role in the series tends to overshadow other characters and their contributions. • The names given to characters in Naruto often carry symbolic meanings that reflect their roles and characteristics. Hashirama’s name, “Hashirama” (柱間), can be interpreted as “the space between two pillars,” which matches his Hokage position, whose role is to support the village as a pillar. His family name, Senju (千手), translates to “thousand hands,” which could symbolize his belief in collaboration and teamwork or the immense responsibilities he carries as a leader.
  • After the death of Madara, no single person was there who could kill Hashirama in a fair fight. Thus, he died naturally in his old age as mentioned by the Third Hokage.

  • Hashirama’s vision for Konoha was not one of dominance over other ninja villages, but rather of collaboration and unity. He believed in working together, which is why he would have gladly shared the Tailed Beasts he captured with the other Kages to balance their power. However, Tobirama didn’t like his plan and suggested selling the beasts instead. The situation became even more complex when Sunagakure requested land and money instead, as they already possessed a Tailed Beast. This angered the other nations, potentially pushing them towards war. Fortunately, Hashirama was able to defuse the tension and prevent conflict by delivering an inspiring speech.
  • Many Naruto fans are aware of Orochimaru’s unethical experiments on a group of children, where he aimed to recreate Hashirama’s Wood Release. It is also known that other antagonistic characters carried on this sinister work. However, what might have been overlooked by some is that initially, Konoha itself attempted to recreate Wood Release. Eventually, due to the immense dangers involved, all such efforts were banned by the village.
  • Hashirama’s face makes a cameo within the fireworks during the omake segment of Shippūden episode 129.
  • Although Hashirama is known for using genjutsu in the series, Yin Release is not listed as one of his elemental natures in the fourth databook.
