Vinsmoke Sanji (ヴィンスモーク・サンジ) is a fictional French character and a chef in the One Piece series, who inspires to find the place called All Blue and has gone on a journey to fulfill his dream. He is a major character in the popular anime One Piece, created by the editor and author/mangaka Eiichiro Oda, and the anime was adapted by Toei Animation.

Vinsmoke Sanji, also known as Sanji, was born on March 2 (age 19 years; debut; 21 years; post-time skip) in the Germa Kindom, North Blue. His zodiac sign is Pieces and his blood group is S RH-. Sanji was inspired to become a top-class chef and wanted to find a place where all the oceans meet from North, South, East, and West. Sanji was found and reduced by Zeff who was his mentor, teacher, and caretaker at the Baratie in East Blue. He sacrificed his leg in order to save Sanji and taught him everything to make him a great human being.

While working at the Bartie, Sanji met Monkey D Luffy and fed his crew. During an attack at the place, Luffy and the crew helped Sanji in fighting the pirates and helping the owner of the place. Luffy asked Sanji to join his crew as the chef to which Sanji agreed and left Bartie. Luffy believes Sanji is the best cook and without his help, Luffy can never become “King of The Pirates”.

Sanji is the third in command of the Straw Hat Pirates and a member of the Demon Trio. He has a rivalry with Roronoa Zoro who keeps amusing and fighting with him. Together these two keep on arguing and never come to a subtle decision. Zoro calls Sanji by various names such as Stupid Cook, Prevert Cook, Curly Brows, etc.

Career
Sanji started cooking for his mother initially when she was sick. He wanted to be a chef so that he can serve food to his mother. When he left his home, he met with Zeff, who is a chef and a former pirate, who taught Sanji how to cook and be a real man. After meeting Luffy, Sanji became the chef of the Straw Hat crew and is onboard with them to sail the world and fulfill his dream. Sanji had gained various fighting skills over the years and during his training in the Kamabaka Kingdom, he got trained to learn various new techniques which would help him get stronger for his friends. He has been victories in various fights that got him high recognition such as his fights with CP9 agents Blueno and Jabra, Elite Officer Vergo, members of the Animal Kingdom Tobbi Roppo- Queen, Page One, and X Drake.

Due to his family, he had to leave the crew in order to get married in a political scenario. He left his friends behind without saying much and had to sacrifice himself for their safety, but Luffy came in order to help him and stop the marriage and the agreement between the corrupt families. Luffy needed Sanji and helped him to come back in the crew after a big fight on the Whole Cake Island and the Big Mom Pirates.
During the events of Wano, it was revealed that Sanji had a raid suit of Germa 66 just like his family which he despised. He used it to hide his identity and fight the bad guys in Wano to save people. He refused to use his powers anymore due to the negative side effects that it was causing and he started to lose his humanity in exchange for inhuman feats of strength.

Sanji is a strong warrior and a pirate who is well-known in the One Piece story. He is the third in command of the Straw Hat Pirates and has defeated various powerful foes such as Jabra, Page One, Queen, etc.

Raid Suit and Genetic Modifications
Sora Vinsmoke, Sanji’s mother used to take drugs during the birth of Sanji in order to avoid him from becoming a genetically mutilated human and his heart would still have humanity. During the events of Wano Arc, Sanji used the raid suit of Germa 66 which gave him powers of Stealth Black and flying. But after a few uses of the Raid Suit, Sanji realized that it was making him awaken the powers which were lying dormant within him and in exchange would destroy his humanity. He destroyed the power of raid suit and delayed the changes of Genetic Modifications.

Black Leg Style
During his stay at Baratie, Sanji learned the art of Black Leg from his mentor Zeff who was also known to teach his students by kicking them. Sanji’s fighting style is a distinctive blend of Brazilian Capoeira, French Savate, and Korean Taekwondo. He prefers to fight with his legs to avoid injuring his hands, which he needs for cooking. As a result, he incorporates handstands into his Black Leg Style instead of punches. He can perform one-handed handstands and consecutive back handsprings. Some of the attacks he uses are Collier, Côtelette, Anti-Manner Kick Course, Tendron, Concassé, Bouquetière Shot, Escalope, and Parage Shot.

Haki Forms
Sanji learned his Haki forms during his stay in the Kamabaka Kingdom where had to constantly fight to protect himself. He majorly learned two types of Haki –
- Observation Haki: Also known as Kenbunshoku Haki, this type of Haki allows Sanji to sense the presence and intentions of others. Sanji has demonstrated mastery of this ability, allowing him to anticipate and dodge attacks even from opponents with exceptional speed and strength.

- Armament Haki: Also known as Busoshoku Haki, this type of Haki enables Sanji to harden his body and attack with an invisible armor-like substance. Sanji has shown exceptional skill in using this Haki, enabling him to augment his physical strikes with incredible power and even bypass the defenses of Logia-type Devil Fruit users.

Sky Walk and Blue Walk
During his stay of 2 years at Momoiro Island, Sanji used to run so fast to escape the dangers that he discovered how to walk on air. This evolved into him learning the Sky Walk technique which allows him to run in the air and float in mid-air to avoid attacks and send attacks from heights. He can also use this technique to walk on water which is called Blue Walk.

Diable Jambe
Sanji unveiled a new ability called Diable Jambe, which allows him to enhance the power of his attacks by spinning his lower legs rapidly in place until they heat up to a scorching temperature and look like flames. The name “Diable” comes from the French word for “Devil” and is also a reference to a kitchen tool, possibly alluding to a spicy French sauce called “sauce à la diable”. He uses this technique to fight various enemies and set them ablaze by charging his legs effortlessly to emit flames. He uses various attacks such as Hell Memories, Diable Jambe: Mutton Shot, Flambage Shot, Well-Cooked Grill Shot, Concassé, and Collier Strike.

During his fight with Queen on the Onigashima Island, Sanji used the technique called Ifrit Jambe in order to burn his flames hotter than normal. This changed his flame color to blue using his haki and Diable Jambe combined which increased the damage power inflicted by him.

During the fight on the Puffing Tom train, Sanji made an exception of not using his hands in combat and used a pair of knives to fight the chef who was using noodles as his shield. Sanji used the technique of Hocho Sabaki (peeling knives) in order to defeat the chef. In movies and a few scenes, Sanji is shown wielding guns which he used only a few times.

Leaving the Crew
Sanji had to leave the crew due to his family which most people believe to be wrong and unjustified as his family is nothing but a bunch of heartless warriors and hired guns famous throughout the seas for all their malpractices. He should have counted on his crew instead and asked them for support. During the Dressrosa Arc, Sanji was about to leave his crew for one of the Donquixote Family members, Viola (Violet).

Extreme Level of Pervertness
Among all the characters of One Piece, Sanji is the most pervert and always tried to get onto women in anyways possible. He tries to flirt with every girl and gets nosebleed after looking at them. This has caused him to mess up plans and get hospitalized due to over-attraction. He even misused his powers to get into the women’s bath to see the women bathing.
Not Fighting Against Female Characters
Sanji is a man of ideals who believes in never hitting a lady, but due to this principle, he has caused his crew and the action plans to suffer. Irrespective of how evil the opponent is, he would never hit her and keep taking the damage until someone comes to rescue him. This becomes a problem for most of the Straw Hats as they have to rush in aid of Sanji who himself is one of the strongest in the crew.

Utterly disrespectful to the Kamabaka Kingdom members
During the 2-year time skip, Sanji had been trained under the member of the Kamabaka Kindom who were men pretending to be live women. They kept hitting on Sanji and almost made him lose his personality as a man, which made him hate them even more. Though apart from their behavior, the people took care of Sanji and taught him how to use Haki and Geppo to order to fight, for which Sanji was never grateful to them and hated them with all his heart and never wanted to see them again.

Sanji had a grudge against Jinbei for letting Arlong wreak havoc in the East Blue in exchange for the title of Warlord of the Sea. Due to this reason, Arlong was able to take over the whole city where Nami was born and made her work for all her life. He blames Jinbei for all the mishappenings that ever occurred to Nami until Luffy came and defeated Arlong.

Facts and Trivia
- Sanji once claimed that 98.72% of the reason for him joining the Straw Hat crew was due to Nami and her beauty.
- Apart from his real name, Sanji is also referred as Mr. Prince (Mr. プリンス, Misutā Purinsu), San-gorou (サン五郎, Sangorō, English versions: Sangoro), Osoba-mask (おそばマスク, O-Soba Masuku, English versions: “Soba Mask”), Black Leg” (黒足, Kuro Ashi) and Black Foot Sanji.
- The initial name of Sanji was supposed to be Naruto but was changed to due a similar anime named Naruto and his protagonist having the same name. He was also supposed to be a gunslinger rather than a martial artist.

- Yūto Tsukuda and Shun Saeki, of Shokugeki no Soma saw the popularity of Sanji’s character and decided to make a full spin-off series featuring him in a 6 chapter adventure during his time in The Baratie.
- Oda stated that if Sanji was to be given a Devil Fruit, it would be Sui Sui no Mi, which would give him the ability to swim on any surface.
