The family was chased down and pushed into poor living conditions as a result of their decision, which resulted in the loss of their privileges and fortune. The tough circumstances caused Doflamingo’s mother to pass away due to illness, and the rest of the family was tormented into a life of suffering and hiding. Doflamingo was extremely angry at his father for their difficult situation and killed him when he was ten years old in an effort to restore their noble rank, but he was rejected and was doomed to live a commoner’s life forever.

Background

Doflamingo, a member of the Donquixote Family, was born into one of the 20 Royal Families of the prestigious World Nobles. However, when he was eight years old, his father, Homing, decided to abandon their status and live a modest life among commoners and moved to an undisclosed Northern country. Doflamingo struggled to let go of his privileged upbringing, but unfortunately, the local residents, driven by their deep-seated hatred towards the World Nobles, resented Doflamingo’s family and subjected them to persecution. Their mansion was burned down, and they were forced to live in a poor little shack amidst a junk pile, scavenging from garbage cans. When Homing reached out to the World Nobles for aid, they callously rejected his plea, leaving Doflamingo stunned and silent. Tragically, their dire living conditions led to the death of his mother due to an illness.

In a fit of rage, the furious citizens discovered the shack where Doflamingo, Rosinante, and Homing had sought refuge, and unleashed their anger upon them. They all were subjected to the brutal and merciless beating but managed to survive due to Doflamingo’s use of Conqueror Haki. This traumatic event left a deep mark on his psyche, fueling his burning desire for vengeance. Blaming his father for the immense suffering they endured, Doflamingo made a fateful decision at the age of ten to kill his own father in a desperate attempt to reclaim his lost World Noble status. Returning to Mary Geoise with his father’s severed head, he hoped to regain his former position, only to be met with rejection from the Celestial Dragons, who branded their family as “traitors.” From that moment onward, Doflamingo harbored an unyielding grudge against the Celestial Dragons, vowing to exact revenge upon them.

Inspired by

A reader questioned whether or not Spider-Man influenced Doflamingo in SBS One Piece volume 96 due to the fact that his devil fruit abilities can also create spider webs in addition to having eyeglasses, that resemble Spider-Man’s eyes. Oda responded that the Kamen Rider Super 1 served as his inspiration saying when you look closely, the eyes on the helmet of Kamen Rider Super 1 resemble Doflamingo’s glasses.

Donquixote Doflamingo’s character in One Piece draws inspiration from the literary figure Don Quixote de la Mancha. Like the noble Don Quixote, Doflamingo’s actions often lead to consequences for those around him. He experiences both the cruelty of society and inflicts it upon others. The irony is that he dismisses the idealistic pursuits of Luffy, similar to how Don Quixote’s quests were seen as impractical. The roles of followers and their consequences are mirrored in the Donquixote Pirates and the Straw Hat Pirates. Doflamingo’s brother, Rosinante, faces tragedy just like Don Quixote’s loyal horse. The themes of pirates and their impact on society are also explored, questioning the morality of the Marines. Overall, the influence of Don Quixote in One Piece adds comedic and satirical tones, reflecting the picaresque genre that focuses on low-class rogues.

Story and Mission

When a mob wanted to kill Doflamingo, it was dispersed when Vergo, Trebol, Pica, and Diamante encountered him and saw that he could wield the Conqueror’s Haki. Trebol was so impressed that he declared Doflamingo to be the chosen one of heaven, and granted him the Ito Ito no Mi and a gun, enabling him to kill whomever he wanted as payback. He formed a group of pirates called the Donquixote Pirates who were led by him to bring a change to his life and conquer the World by storm. He met a lot of people whom he recruited and made a part of his family. He conquered various small countries and made many underworld dealings, giving him the famous alias of Joker which was known among all Grand Line. During this time, he found out about his brother’s betrayal as a marine and had to kill him with the same pistol he used to kill his father making him the last surviving person of the Donquixote Family.

Together with his pirate group at the age of 31 years, he was able to take over the Dressrosa Kingdom by plotting against Riku Doldo III, who was the ruler at the time. He presented a demand to the Riku Kingdom for payment of 10 billion berries by the next day to spare the country from conflict, but in a cunning move, he utilized his Devil Fruit powers from the shadows to control King Riku, causing him to go on a destructive rampage in the city of Sebio. Exploiting the ongoing panic, Doflamingo’s subordinates infiltrated the castle with the help of a spy and took Princess Viola hostage. With the citizens’ trust shattered, Doflamingo and his associates appeared as supposed heroes, defeating the king and his forces leading to the Donquixote Pirates seizing control of Dressrosa. Subsequently, he assumed the throne, blaming the former king for the nation’s poverty and promising wealth to its people. Later he used Sugar’s Devil Fruit ability to transform retainers into living toys, erasing their identities and causing their loved ones to forget them.

While initially appearing as their ally, he demonstrated a disregard for authority during a meeting at the Mary Geoise. Doflamingo aggressively threatened a government employee when he questioned about his failure to deal with Moria, claiming that he was a pirate and had the right to leave the Seven Warlords of the Sea if their people were dissatisfied with him. He was very explicit about his lack of honest concern for the World Government. However, Doflamingo manipulated the government into accepting him as a Warlord from the beginning through blackmail. But his status as a Warlord was terminated after his loss in Dressrosa, and he was eventually captured like an ordinary criminal.

Following the events of the war at Marineford, Doflamingo was tasked with eliminating Moria. In their encounter, Doflamingo inflicted severe injuries upon Moria, but instead of finishing him off, he callously mocked him. Doflamingo revealed that the World Government had deemed Moria too weak to remain a Warlord, suggesting that it would be more favorable for Moria to be presumed dead, having fought honorably in the war. Despite Moria managing to escape Doflamingo’s clutches, the encounter left a lasting impression of Doflamingo’s merciless nature and his willingness to execute orders without hesitation.

Doflamingo is cruelly harsh and intolerant towards those he opposes, but he has a genuine love for the Donquixote Pirates, who have been his family ever since his birth clan sentenced him to a life of suffering. This was evident when he expressed his sincere gratitude to Vergo for his years of devotion and was genuinely upset at the concept of Monet risking her life to eliminate Punk Hazard.

Trebol and Doflamingo share an intriguing bond, and despite Doflamingo’s authoritative position as the captain, Trebol displays a casual attitude towards him, often getting uncomfortably close, much to his comfort level. Their connection traces back to Doflamingo’s childhood when Trebol spared him from the torment inflicted by the North Blue citizens. In an act of empowerment, Trebol bestowed Doflamingo with his Devil Fruit and his signature flintlock, forging a bond between them. Doflamingo demonstrates genuine concern for Trebol’s well-being, while Trebol fiercely protects and defends Doflamingo, swiftly retaliating against anyone who dares to slight him. Their relationship is characterized by a complex mix of camaraderie, trust, and a shared commitment to one another’s safety.

Diamante holds a significant position in Doflamingo’s esteem as the celebrated “Hero of the Corrida Colosseum” on Dressrosa. Their bond spans over three decades, and Diamante’s unwavering loyalty to Doflamingo is truly remarkable. His dedication is so profound that he would go to extreme lengths, such as destroying an entire town, simply because its uneven pavement caused Doflamingo to trip. Doflamingo trusts Diamante implicitly, entrusting him with the responsibility of safeguarding the Mera Mera no Mi. He also refers to him as “Doffy,” like other top members of the Doquixote Family.

Even though they tackle things in very different ways, Pica remains loyal in his commitment to Doflamingo and is always willing to follow Doflamingo’s commands even though he prefers direct conflict. Over the course of their three decades of time together, Pica’s intense loyalty has been an important trait and Doflamingo shows his appreciation for Pica’s loyalty by guarding him and refusing to put up with any teasing about his high voice. Pica calls Doflamingo fondly “Doffy,” indicating the familiarity and regard they share, just like with the other senior officers.

Doflamingo is fiercely possessive of Sugar because she helped him govern Dressrosa by turning the majority of his opposition into toys and helping others follow their laws in the city. Giolla’s loyalty to Doflamingo is unwavering, as she is always willing to sacrifice her life to ensure his goals are achieved without any hindrance. Doflamingo is adored and devoted by Lao G, who refers to him as Young Master and regards his instructions as final. He remarked that everyone in the nation is a slave to Doflamingo and that Dressrosa belongs to him but during his loss, Lao G felt bad for it and also made an apology to Doflamingo.

Among Doflamingo’s subordinates, Senor Pink expressed his loyalty and respect for him as he fought against Franky, apologizing as he fell in battle. However, his presence around Doflamingo is not prominent beyond that. On the other hand, Gladius displays unwavering and blind loyalty toward his captain, swiftly seeking revenge for Violet’s betrayal. He even demonstrated his overprotectiveness by shooting Baby 5 when she attempted to harm Doflamingo, highlighting his commitment compared to the indifference of other crew members.

Monet, a loyal subordinate of Doflamingo, was tasked with keeping a watchful eye on Caesar Clown as his authority was evident when he threatened her if any harm came to the scientist. He even ordered her to carry out a suicide bombing to eliminate everyone on Punk Hazard and tidy up the situation. Despite these strict instructions, Doflamingo appeared to feel bad about forcing her to such hardships. As she had already considered self-sacrifice prior to Doflamingo’s demands, Monet’s loyalty remained unwavering, and she obediently followed his final instruction.

Caesar Clown and Doflamingo have a professional relationship as Ceasar waits for Doflamingo’s consent before acting in order to keep Punk Hazard from drawing unwanted attention. Doflamingo usually keeps doubts about the scientist and is unsure about his loyalty but despite this, Doflamingo really appreciates Caesar’s skills, especially his capacity to produce SAD, which Doflamingo uses to manufacture SMILE fruits. which is significant because it stops Kaido from retaliating against the Donquixote Pirates as a whole.

Initially, Doflamingo viewed Bellamy and his crew as promising underlings and took them under his wing. He provided them with support and resources, however, Doflamingo’s true intentions were revealed when he mercilessly defeated Bellamy, considering him weak and unworthy. This act shattered Bellamy’s trust and loyalty towards Doflamingo. Despite the betrayal, Bellamy later resurfaced during the Dressrosa Arc, seeking redemption and a chance to prove himself.

Doflamingo on the surface appeared to be a kind and brave ruler, especially in comparison to the prior king Riku who drove havoc throughout the kingdom. In reality, he has persuaded the king to do so and has tricked his way into the hearts of the citizens. Doflamingo ruled Dressrosa with complete dominance while he was in that position and his Warlord position allowed him to rule the kingdom without his criminal history having any bearing on his standing.

Doflamingo’s relationship with Kaidou is one of mutual benefit and caution. Doflamingo provided Kaidou with SMILE Devil Fruits, a valuable commodity that granted artificial Devil Fruit powers to users. This alliance was formed due to Kaidou’s overwhelming power and influence, making him a formidable force that Doflamingo didn’t want to cross. Doflamingo maintains a careful balance, recognizing the importance of the alliance with Kaidou and the reliance on Caesar’s abilities. He knows that his success and safety hinge on keeping Kaidou satisfied and the supply of SMILE fruits flowing.

  • Resilience and Willpower: Doflamingo possesses a strong will and a relentless determination to achieve his goals. He has endured significant hardships and setbacks without faltering, making him a formidable adversary who never gives up easily.

These strengths, combined with his powerful Devil Fruit abilities and combat skills, establish Doflamingo as a formidable and dangerous antagonist in the One Piece series.

Weakness

  • Vulnerability to Haki: Despite his proficiency in using Haki himself, Doflamingo is susceptible to attacks enhanced with Haki. Strong Busoshoku Haki users such as Luffy in Gear 4 can overcome the durability of his strings and directly damage him, leading to his defeat.

  • Emotional Instability: Doflamingo’s mental state can be a weakness. He has a sadistic nature and a tendency to lose control when his plans are disrupted or when he faces resistance making his head veins pop out. This emotional instability can lead to reckless decision-making and impaired judgment.
  • Lack of Physical Adaptability: Doflamingo’s combat style revolves around his string power and his Devil Fruit abilities. He relies less on physical combat techniques and may struggle against opponents who possess superior hand-to-hand combat skills or unique fighting styles that can bypass his strings in close combat.

Signature Move

Doflamingo’s ultimate and most powerful attack, the “God Thread” showcases his mastery over the Ito Ito no Mi Devil Fruit. He gathers an immense amount of razor-sharp strings to form a colossal web that immobilizes multiple targets. The God Thread exhibits incredible strength and durability, making escape challenging. He can also manipulate the strings to crush his enemies and create a formidable defensive barrier capable of withstanding powerful assaults, including Haki-enhanced attacks.

While Doflamingo is a beloved and memorable character in One Piece, there are some criticisms that have been raised about a few aspects of his portrayal:

  • Extra draggy Prolonged Arc: Doflamingo’s role in the Dressrosa arc is quite extensive, spanning over a significant number of episodes and chapters. Some viewers and readers have felt that the arc’s length, which heavily focuses on Doflamingo’s actions and backstory, may have dragged on and slowed down the pacing of the overall narrative.
  • Lack of Depth: Although Doflamingo’s character has a compelling backstory, some critics argue that there could have been more exploration of his motivations and internal struggles. While his ambition and hunger for power are established, further exploration of his emotional depth could have added more complexity to his character.
