Love Interest – Girlfriend

In Part I of the series, Rock Lee developed feelings for Sakura Haruno. However, Sakura did not share the same romantic interest and initially found Lee’s behavior odd. Despite this, Sakura began to appreciate and befriend Lee more after he helped rescue her during the Chūnin Exams. In the manga, Lee’s romantic interest in Sakura was not further explored after the exams, although it was occasionally referenced in the anime. In one instance, Naruto transformed into Sakura during a match with Lee, which distracted him. In Lee’s dream during the Infinite Tsukuyomi, he desired to win Sakura’s affection, suggesting that his feelings for her were still there. However, in adulthood, Lee eventually married someone else and had a son named Metal Lee, indicating that his romantic feelings for Sakura had changed over time.

Background

During his time in the Academy, Rock Lee struggled with ninjutsu and genjutsu. His peers used to mock him for being unable to perform any jutsu. However, he focused his efforts on taijutsu and graduated from the Academy. He joined Team Guy, led by Might Guy, along with Neji Hyūga and Tenten. Guy saw potential in Lee and began teaching him powerful forms of taijutsu.

During the Chūnin Exams, Team Guy initially tried to hide their true strength but Lee accidentally revealed his abilities while intervening in a fight between Sasuke and Kotetsu. Lee also developed feelings for Sakura and challenged Sasuke to a fight to test his skills against the Sharingan.

In the preliminaries, Lee faced Gaara and suffered severe injuries. Medical experts predicted that even if he recovered, he would never be able to be a shinobi again. Despite his condition, Lee attempted to train in the hospital, which only worsened his injuries. To lift his spirits, Guy took Lee to watch the final round, where they learned that Neji had been defeated by Naruto. Lee silently congratulated Naruto and witnessed Gaara’s fight against Sasuke, and admired how quickly Sasuke had learned to mimic his speed. However, before the fight could conclude, the Konoha Crush began, and Lee was knocked unconscious.

In an attempt to heal Lee’s injuries, Guy tried various remedies, but none of them were successful. Their hope was reignited when they heard that Tsunade would become the new Hokage. Although his broken bones and torn muscles had healed, bone fragments were lodged in his spinal column, requiring a complex surgery that only she could perform. Tsunade presented Lee with two options: undergo the operation with a fifty percent chance of returning to his former state or potentially dying in the process. Lee was initially hesitant about accepting the surgery due to the risk of death, but with Guy’s influence and support, he ultimately chose to go through with it.

Inspired By

All character names in the Naruto franchise are carefully chosen and often carry special meanings related to the character’s personality. In the case of Rock Lee, his name is a tribute to the person who served as an inspiration for his character. In Japanese, Bruce Lee’s name is pronounced similarly to the word for the musical genre, “blues.” This concept was incorporated into the naming of Rock Lee, as well as his son, Metal Lee. Furthermore, Rock Lee’s hairstyle bears a resemblance to Bruce Lee’s iconic hairstyle. Both Rock Lee and Bruce Lee exemplify the idea that through hard work and training, one can accomplish feats that may initially seem impossible. This parallels the impact Bruce Lee had on his film audiences worldwide.

Creator

Rock Lee is a character created by Masashi Kishimoto, the author and artist of the Naruto manga series. Kishimoto envisioned Lee as a dedicated and hardworking ninja who lacks natural talent in ninjutsu and genjutsu. He wanted to highlight Lee’s determination to overcome his limitations through his unwavering commitment to taijutsu and his strong spirit. Kishimoto developed Lee’s character to highlight the importance of perseverance and hard work in achieving one’s goals, making him an inspirational figure in the Naruto series.

Development

Masashi Kishimoto, the creator of Naruto, expressed his fondness for drawing Rock Lee more than any other character in the series during an interview in Weekly Shōnen Jump’s Naruto Anime interview Episodes 1-37. Originally, Kishimoto intended for Lee to wield various weapons, including nunchaku, but due to time constraints, he was unable to incorporate them into the series. Kishimoto’s first editor, Kosuke Yahagi, provided a draft of Lee’s appearance, which underwent significant changes in the final design. Despite this, Yahagi was pleased that some elements from the original draft were retained. Kishimoto initially designed Lee to symbolize human weakness, a theme he also intended for Sakura Haruno. He was surprised by the popularity Lee gained among fans and had plans to include more content about his character, although the timing never aligned. Due to Lee’s popularity, Kishimoto often features him prominently in promotional artwork. In an interview, Brian Donovan, the English voice actor for Rock Lee in the anime adaptation, expressed his appreciation for the character. Donovan described Lee as someone who aspires to be a “knight in shining armor” but often fumbles and stumbles along the way, which he found endearing.

An Inspiring Character

Masashi Kishimoto developed Rock Lee’s character with a specific goal in mind: to emphasize the power of hard work and dedication in the face of difficulty. Kishimoto wanted to create a character who, despite lacking talent in ninjutsu and genjutsu, could still achieve greatness through sheer determination and hard training in taijutsu.

Unique Appearance

Kishimoto gave Rock Lee a distinct appearance, with bushy eyebrows and a vibrant green jumpsuit, to make him visually memorable. He also incorporated comedic elements into Lee’s character, such as his passionate personality and exaggerated reactions, to provide lighthearted moments in the story.

The Value of Friendship

By exploring Lee’s journey and his interactions with other characters, Kishimoto further developed his personality and values. Lee’s loyalty to his friends, particularly his mentor Might Guy, showed his strong sense of camaraderie. Kishimoto also integrated moments of vulnerability for Lee, such as his struggle with self-doubt and the physical setbacks he faced, adding depth and complexity to his character.

Story/Mission

Sasuke Recovery Mission

Upon overhearing Naruto, Chōji Akimichi, Kiba Inuzuka, and Shikamaru discussing their mission to bring Sasuke back to Konoha, Lee suggested that Neji join them. Lee was disappointed that he couldn’t accompany them as he still needed to undergo his scheduled surgery later that day (in the anime, Lee had already undergone the surgery the day before and was recovering). However, once Lee regained enough strength to move, he left the hospital and decided to follow them, determined to provide assistance. He caught up with Naruto, who was engaged in a battle with Kimimaro and instructed Naruto to pursue Sasuke while he faced off against Kimimaro himself.

Kurosuki Family Removal Mission

In the anime, Lee shared a story about running a marathon with Guy near the village of Katabami Kinzan shortly after joining Team Guy. During the marathon, Lee collapsed from exhaustion near the Curry of Life shop. The owner, Sanshō, and her son Karashi saved his life by feeding him curry. Inspired by Lee’s dedication, Karashi became interested in training. A year later, when Lee returned to the village with his teammates and Naruto to defeat the Kurosuki family, he discovered that Karashi had joined them. Lee was upset that Karashi had sought strength through questionable means. However, he allowed Karashi the opportunity to seek redemption. Unfortunately, Karashi used this chance to lure Lee’s group into a trap after their first battle with Raiga. The trap failed due to Naruto’s use of shadow clones, and the villagers wanted to seek vengeance on Karachi. But Lee stepped in, taking responsibility for Karashi’s actions. Karashi then took advantage of the situation to bring Ranmaru to revive Raiga. Lee, along with Naruto and Neji, confronted Raiga in battle. After the matter was settled down, the group returned to the Curry of Life shop, they discovered that Karashi had made a new curry that looked delicious. While the rest of the group hesitated to try it, Lee couldn’t wait and eagerly wanted to taste it. The group had to physically drag Lee back to Konoha while he cried for the curry.

Academy Student Lead Mission

In the anime, Lee was given the responsibility of leading a team of three Academy students on a survival exercise. During the exercise, they encountered some “bandits” that they had to counter. Impressed by Lee’s skills, one of the students addressed him as “Lee-sensei” out of respect.

Star Guard Mission

Lee joined Neji, Naruto, and Tenten on a mission to Hoshigakure. In this particular arc, Lee played a lesser role compared to previous storylines. During the mission, he attempted to follow two of Akahoshi’s men by hiding under a barrel, as suggested by Tenten. However, his cover was quickly blown, and he was discovered. Later, when the team was trying to infiltrate Akahoshi’s mansion, Lee used a deception technique called the “Wall-Removing Technique” to create the illusion that he was passing through walls. In reality, he was moving at high speed to open a door from the other side. During the final battle with Akahoshi, Lee sustained injuries, which prevented him from continuing the fight. As a result, Naruto had to confront Akahoshi alone while Lee provided support from the sidelines.

Third Great Beast Arc

Lee’s condition was serious, which made Tsunade worry about the need for re-injury. As a precaution, she decided to remove him from missions but allowed him to continue training after he convinced her. Meanwhile, Guy introduced a new student to Lee, who easily defeated him and injured his ankle. While Lee was in the process of recovering, Guy took the new student on a mission, leaving Lee feeling abandoned and betrayed. Later, it was revealed that the new student was actually an impostor seeking revenge against Guy. Fueled by his desire for revenge, the impostor lured Lee to a castle. Within the castle, both Lee and Guy were tricked into perceiving each other as practice dummies. They were manipulated into fighting one another, but their keen awareness and familiarity with each other’s fighting styles helped them see through the deception. In the end, they successfully came out of this castle.

Kazekage Rescue Arc

After Team Kakashi embarked on a mission to rescue Gaara from Akatsuki, Tsunade began to have concerns about potential obstacles they might face. As a precaution, she dispatched Team Guy as a backup. During their mission, they encountered Kisame Hoshigaki, who launched an attack on them. Kisame’s water clones captured Lee, Neji, and Tenten in a Water Prison. After a considerable struggle, Neji eventually freed Lee and Tenten. They then witnessed Guy defeating Kisame. However, to their surprise, they discovered that the opponent they had been facing was merely a lookalike and not the real Kisame. When they regrouped with Team Kakashi, they found a barrier obstructing the entrance to the Akatsuki lair. They managed to remove the barrier but were immediately ambushed by their own clones. With their individual battles won, Team Guy regrouped and rendezvoused with Team 7. Following the successful revival of Gaara and the completion of their mission, both teams accompanied Gaara back to Sunagakure and paid their respects at Chiyo’s grave. Afterward, the two teams departed for Konoha.

Five Kage Summit

Upon receiving news of Sasuke Uchiha’s crimes against other villages, Lee and the rest of the Konoha 11 are determined to personally confront and eliminate Sasuke before he drags Konoha into a war. When they finally track him down, Sakura confesses her love to Naruto, which surprises Lee. However, this declaration does not distract Lee from his resolve to find Sasuke. Despite his objections, they part ways without further discussion. Eventually, Sakura and Team 7 encounter Sasuke, and they subsequently locate Lee and the others, bringing them back to Konoha. Later, Lee is among the Konoha 11 assembled to hear Naruto’s decision to take responsibility for Sasuke.

Fourth Shinobi World War

During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Lee’s involvement in the conflict showcases his growth as a shinobi. Assigned to the Third Division alongside Sakura and Guy, Lee actively participates in battles against the reincarnated shinobi. When the Surprise Attack Division is attacked, Lee and his division arrive in time to counter the enemy forces. Throughout the war, Lee engages in intense battles and uses his exceptional taijutsu skills, including opening the Fifth Gate, to contribute to the Allied Forces’ efforts. The war takes a devastating turn when Neji, one of Lee’s closest friends and teammates, sacrifices himself to protect Naruto. Lee is deeply affected by Neji’s death and mourns his fallen comrade alongside Guy and Tenten. However, Guy reminds Lee to hold onto the feelings Neji left behind and to keep moving forward. Motivated by Neji’s sacrifice, Lee listens to Naruto’s words of encouragement and reflects on the conversations he had with Neji in the past. Empowered by Naruto’s chakra, Lee respectfully closes Neji’s eyes and joins the ranks of the Allied shinobi in their final charge. Lee takes on the task of confronting Madara alongside Guy. With Guy’s support, Lee launches a powerful kick that cuts Madara’s connection to the Ten-Tails.

Battles

The Forest Of Death

After Team Guy spent some time gathering supplies in the Forest of Death during the Chūnin Exams, they split up to search for other teams. During his search, Lee came across Sakura being attacked by Team Dosu. He quickly intervened and attacked with the Front Lotus technique on Dosu Kinuta. However, Dosu survived the attack thanks to Zaku Abumi’s defensive move. Lee was left vulnerable and unable to defend himself against Dosu’s counterattack. Fortunately, Neji and Tenten arrived on the scene, but their assistance became unnecessary as Sasuke woke up and defeated Team Dosu. Once Lee recovered and their team obtained the required scroll, they proceeded to the preliminaries of the Chūnin Exams.

Confrontation With Kimimaro

During the Sasuke Recovery Mission, Lee faced off against Kimimaro, who was Orochimaru’s assistant trying to prevent Naruto from pursuing Sasuke. Initially, it appeared that Kimimaro had the upper hand, but things took a surprising turn when Lee mistakenly drank sake instead of his medicine. The alcohol enhanced his performance. Lee’s unpredictable moves caught Kimimaro off guard, but the latter revealed his Kekkei Genkai, Shikotsumyaku, turning the tide of the battle. Fortunately, Gaara arrived in the nick of time to rescue Lee from Kimimaro’s attack. Despite Lee’s insistence on fighting alongside Gaara, he recognized that he would only be a hindrance. After the intense battle, Lee and Gaara came to know about Kimimaro’s motives and then returned to Konoha together.

Challenged Sasuke

In the early stages of the series, Rock Lee bravely challenged Sasuke, seeking to test his own abilities against the famous Sharingan. Lee initially gained the advantage with relative ease. However, before Lee could execute his powerful Front Lotus technique, Guy intervened and interrupted the fight between Lee and Sasuke. However, both Lee and Sasuke gained valuable insights into each other’s abilities and techniques during the fight. Ultimately, this experience proved to be a significant advantage for Sasuke in the grand scheme of things.

The Match Against Gaara

During the preliminaries, Lee was pitted against Gaara, a shinobi from the Sand Village. Despite his continuous attacks, Lee struggled to break through Gaara’s defenses. In a bold move, Lee decided to remove his ankle weights, enhancing his speed and allowing him to land a few successful hits on Gaara. Determined to prove himself, Lee used his ultimate technique, the Primary Lotus. However, Gaara managed to escape using a clever substitution with a sand clone. With victory slipping away, Guy made a crucial decision and granted Lee permission to use the risky Reverse Lotus technique. The intense attack left Gaara severely injured, even though he was covered with his strong sand armor. Unfortunately, the Reverse Lotus took a significant toll on Lee’s body, and Gaara further crushed Lee’s left arm and leg. Just as Gaara was about to deliver a fatal blow, Guy intervened to save Lee. Despite being unconscious and severely injured, Lee’s determination drove him to rise to his feet, ready to continue the battle.

A Combat During The Next Chunin Exam

The Chūnin Exams were held after a two-year period, jointly organized by Konoha and Suna. Each team was assigned either a Heaven or Earth scroll and tasked with obtaining the opposite scroll. During the chunin test, Lee challenged Shira to a one-on-one battle. Although both showed impressive speed and skill, Neji observed that Shira held a slight advantage in terms of his solid build and greater raw strength. Initially, Lee attempted to activate the Eight Gates, but Shira had already anticipated this move and struck Lee’s pressure points beforehand, preventing him from using the technique. However, Lee adapted his tactics by making strategies different from those taught by Might Guy. By manipulating Shira’s movements, Lee managed to push him back. Recognizing each other’s determination, Shira struck Lee’s pressure points again to remove the handicap, desiring to face Lee at his best. As Lee unleashed the power of the Eight Gates, Shira used the Seven Heavens Breathing Method, proving to be an equal match for Lee’s technique. The intensity of their battle escalated, causing Shira’s previous injuries to reopen. Concerned for Shira’s well-being, Lee called off the fight.

Pitted Against His Own Clone

Lee engaged in a fierce battle against his own clone during the Kazekage rescue mission. Lee communicated with the rest of the team and proposed a solution: to surpass their previous selves and become stronger than when the clones were created. Drawing upon his newfound resolve, Lee used a new technique and defeated his clone.

Victories

  • Mastering the Art of Taijutsu: Rock Lee’s greatest victory lies in his mastery of Taijutsu, or hand-to-hand combat. Despite being unable to use ninjutsu or genjutsu due to a lack of natural talent, Lee dedicates himself to rigorous training and becomes an exceptional practitioner of Taijutsu. His skill and speed in close combat enable him to defeat opponents who rely on other forms of combat.
  • Opening the Gates: Lee’s unique ability to unlock the Eight Gates technique allows him to access immense power and speed, enhancing his Taijutsu skills even further. By opening the gates, he can surpass his physical limits and achieve extraordinary feats in battle.

  • Overcoming Self-Doubt: Throughout the series, Lee struggles with self-doubt and feelings of shortcoming due to his limitations. • Inspiring Others: Rock Lee’s dedication and never-give-up attitude inspire and motivate those around him, including his teammates and fellow ninja. His victories extend beyond personal triumphs as he becomes a source of inspiration for others, encouraging them to push their limits and strive for greatness.

Failures

  • Inability to Use Ninjutsu and Genjutsu: One of Lee’s primary limitations is his inability to use ninjutsu and genjutsu due to his lack of natural talent in those areas. This places him at a disadvantage when facing opponents who rely on these techniques. While Lee compensates for this with his exceptional Taijutsu skills, his inability to utilize other forms of combat can be seen as a limitation and a failure in terms of versatility.
  • Losing to Opponents with Superior Skills: Despite his determination and training, Lee faces defeat against opponents who possess greater power, abilities, or experience. For example, Lee is overwhelmed by opponents such as Kimimaro and Gaara, despite his best efforts. These losses serve as reminders of the limitations of his abilities and the challenges he faces in surpassing more skilled opponents.
  • Struggling with Injuries and Physical Limitations: Lee’s intense training and reliance on the Eight Gates technique put a significant strain on his body. This results in severe injuries and long recovery periods. Lee’s physical limitations hinder his ability to engage in battles and can be seen as a failure in terms of his overall durability and sustainability as a ninja.

  • Failing to Become a Chunin: In the Naruto series, Lee participates in the Chunin Exams, a significant event for young ninjas to prove their skills and advance in rank. However, Lee fails to advance to the chunin rank during the exams, representing a temporary setback and a personal failure in achieving the desired promotion.

Friends/Allies

Might Guy

Since his time at the academy, Lee has been closely mentored by the renowned taijutsu master, Might Guy, who holds the title of Konoha’s top specialist in that field. From the beginning, Guy recognized Lee’s potential and took great pride in witnessing his progress. Lee, in turn, not only viewed Guy as his sensei but also as a father figure. He would become visibly upset and angered whenever anyone dared to mock or belittle Guy. Lee was eventually assigned to Team Guy, alongside Tenten and Neji Hyuga. During this period, Lee began to emulate Guy not only in his training and techniques but also in his appearance, adopting similar clothing and even styling his hair in the same manner. It was during their time together that a rivalry between Lee and Neji emerged. Lee firmly believed that through unwavering dedication and relentless effort, he could surpass the innate talent of a natural genius like Neji. However, Neji held the belief that he was inherently superior to Lee, dismissing the significance of hard work in comparison to natural ability.

Neji Hyūga

Neji, Lee’s highly skilled teammate and rival, held the belief that Lee’s relentless efforts were futile, as he saw Lee as a “failure” who could never surpass a “genius” like himself. Despite Neji’s cold attitude, Lee was fueled by the desire to prove him wrong and sought to defeat him. However, in their numerous encounters, Lee faced defeat at the hands of Neji each time. The turning point came when Neji himself was defeated by Naruto Uzumaki, someone who was also considered a “failure.” This defeat shattered Neji’s belief in a predetermined fate and changed his perspective. Neji began to develop respect for Lee, recognizing his work ethic. Neji now believed that with enough hard work, Lee could surpass those who were naturally gifted, just as Naruto had done.

Tenten

As members of Team Guy, Tenten and Lee shared a close bond and spent a significant amount of time together. They trained side by side, undertook missions as a team, and endured the unique and sometimes unconventional training methods of their sensei, Guy. While Lee passionately embraced Guy’s demanding training instructions, Tenten often voiced her objections and expressed her exhaustion. However, despite her reservations, Tenten remained fully committed to her team and gave her utmost effort. She served as his biggest cheerleader, alongside Guy Sensei, always encouraging him and standing by his side. Lee, in turn, valued their friendship immensely and saw Tenten as an integral part of his life. The strength of their bond can be witnessed when Lee intervened in Tenten’s fight during the Chunin Exams. When Temari posed a threat to Tenten, Lee swiftly came to her aid, preventing her from falling onto a floor covered in sharp weapons.

Naruto Uzumaki

As time passed, Naruto and Lee developed an understanding and appreciation for each other’s strength and determination. They formed a special bond rooted in their shared experiences as underdogs within the village. Lee found inspiration in Naruto’s strong spirit, recognizing a similar mindset in himself. Together, they cheered each other on throughout their respective journeys to become powerful shinobi. In times of need, Lee and Naruto were always there to support one another. During the Sasuke retrieval mission, Lee stepped in to help Naruto by taking on Kimimaro. Similarly, Naruto fearlessly came to Lee’s aid when Gaara attempted to assassinate him, standing by his side alongside Shikamaru to protect their friend. As they matured, Lee and Naruto continued to serve as sources of motivation and encouragement for each other.

They recognize the importance of teamwork and the value of supporting their fellow shinobi. When circumstances bring them together, they quickly establish a common ground and collaborate effectively. A notable instance of Kiba and Lee’s shared understanding occurred when they expressed their surprise and disappointment in Sakura’s confession to Naruto. Kiba voiced his desire for Sakura to have informed them of her intentions beforehand, to which Lee agreed. Both Kiba and Lee asserted that they would have opposed Sakura’s decision.

In the aftermath of the Chunin Exams, when Lee suffered severe injuries during his intense battle against Gaara, Sakura showed her support by regularly visiting him at the hospital. Shikamaru tried to remain calm and composed, even kept Gaara engaged in his bluffs to buy some time. In this critical moment, Shikamaru’s efforts proved to be effective in saving Lee’s life. Gaara’s deadly attack left Lee with severe injuries and created bitterness between them. Gaara’s subsequent attempt to assassinate Lee while he was recovering in the hospital only added to the tension and unresolved issues between them. However, their dynamic took a significant turn during the Sasuke retrieval mission. When Lee was overwhelmed and near his limits in his battle against Kimimaro, Gaara appeared just in time to provide support. Gaara stepped in and took over the fight, assisting Lee in defeating their common enemy. After the intense battle, Lee and Gaara had a heartfelt conversation about the meaning of having people in their lives whom they would fight and even die for. Gaara, known for his struggles with understanding relationships, openly expressed his confusion and sought validation from Lee. This exchange allowed them to connect on a deeper level and set aside their past conflicts, developing a sense of mutual understanding and respect.

Despite their limited direct interactions, Tsunade recognizes Lee’s commitment to becoming a powerful ninja and values his perseverance and hard work. As a renowned medical ninja, Tsunade has provided healing and medical guidance to Lee when needed. During Lee’s early encounter with Tsunade, she was brutally honest and advised him to give up his dreams of becoming a shinobi due to his physical limitations. However, Tsunade’s perspective on Lee changed as she continued her research on cell revitalization. Soon, she developed a risky surgical procedure that had the potential to heal his injuries but also posed a significant risk to his life. Lee was grateful for the opportunity given to him by Tsunade and underwent the surgery. Thankfully, he survived the procedure and was able to continue his journey as a shinobi.

Transformations

Lee’s mastery of the Eight Gates is a testament to his determination and dedication to his training. Opening the Eight Gates grants him tremendous power, speed, and unique physical abilities, surpassing the limits of a normal shinobi. Despite the toll it takes on his body, Lee can open some of the gates instantly and recover faster from their usage. He has also developed taijutsu techniques associated with specific gates, such as the Front Lotus with the first gate, the Reverse Lotus with the third gate, and the Crane Wing Formation in collaboration with the Suicide Corps when he activates the sixth gate.

Abilities

Taijutsu

During his time at the Academy, Lee faced criticism for his lack of proficiency in ninjutsu and genjutsu. Nevertheless, with the unwavering support and mentorship of Might Guy, Lee transformed himself into an exceptional ninja who specialized exclusively in taijutsu. Although initially limited in his taijutsu abilities, Lee’s progress was remarkable by Part I of the series. Due to his excellent taijutsu skills, Lee was able to compete with Sasuke Uchiha, a prodigious talent, and pose a tough challenge to Gaara during the Chūnin Exams and Kimimaro during Sasuke Recovery Mission. As a chūnin, Lee was able to overpower the renowned taijutsu master Chen and even single-handedly destroy a meteorite. Lee’s continuous improvement and dedication to his craft allowed him to reach the esteemed rank of jōnin by adulthood.

Physical Prowess

By the age of 13, Lee’s relentless training had molded him into a master of taijutsu, possessing skill in the Strong Fist fighting style. His immense physical strength allowed him to uproot massive trees, and even though Sasuke could anticipate his moves with the Sharingan during their initial encounter, Lee’s speed surpassed his opponent’s reaction time. As part of his training, Lee consistently wore heavy ankle weights, and when he removed them, his speed increased dramatically: becoming the first person to bypass Gaara’s formidable Shield of Sand and land a strike on him. As a chūnin, Lee was able to perform the Leaf Great Gale (Konoha Daireppū). In the anime, Lee’s training has pushed his abilities to extraordinary levels, enabling him to run and engage in combat even while unconscious or asleep, relying solely on muscle memory.

Rock Lee quickly dodges Gaara's attacks

Drunken Fist

Due to his exceptionally low alcohol tolerance, Lee possesses a unique affinity for the Drunken Fist style. Even consuming just a small amount of alcohol, such as a single drop, unleashes a drastic transformation within him. In this state, Lee becomes an unpredictable and virtually unstoppable force, wreaking havoc on both allies and enemies alike. The Drunken Fist enhances his speed and durability, granting him the ability to strike from unpredictable angles and dodge attacks quickly. Lee’s mastery of the Drunken Fist style was evident when he engaged in a battle against Kimimaro, one of Orochimaru’s special subordinates.

Eight Gates

By the age of 12, Lee had already mastered the first five gates. Over time, he continued to push himself and eventually mastered the sixth gate at the age of 17. In the anime, he goes on to unlock the seventh gate sometime after the Fourth Shinobi World War, and by adulthood, he becomes proficient in opening all of the Eight Gates. Each gate he opens exponentially enhances his strength, speed, chakra levels, and bodily functions. However, it comes at a great cost as it puts immense strain on his body, resulting in potential physical damage. Lee is aware of these risks and only opens the gates during critical moments or to protect something or someone dear to him.

Attacks/Skills

Leaf Whirlwind

The Leaf Whirlwind is a technique that requires incredible speed and physical prowess. It delivers a series of rapid and relentless kicks to overwhelm the opponent. This technique employs a combination of high and low kicks executed with such speed that even those with the Sharingan struggle to react and defend against them. The initial kick serves as a distraction, causing the opponent to focus on blocking it, leaving them vulnerable to subsequent strikes. Rock Lee first demonstrated the Leaf Whirlwind against Sasuke Uchiha before the Chunin Exams. The technique proved effective in keeping Kimimaro, a wielder of the kekkei genkai, at bay during their encounter.

Leaf Rising Wind

The Leaf Rising Wind is a technique that relies on the user’s leg strength and body flexibility. By utilizing their body as a coiled spring, the user advances themselves forward with incredible force, delivering a single, powerful kick. This kick has the capability to launch the opponent skyward, leaving them vulnerable to further attacks. Rock Lee has used the Leaf Rising Wind on multiple occasions, particularly against opponents who were considered superior in strength and skill. For instance, during his encounter with Sasuke Uchiha before the Chunin Exams, Lee emerged victorious with the help of this technique. Additionally, when facing Kisame Hoshigaki, Lee’s powerful kick caused Kisame to lose his Samehada sword due to the intense force exerted on his hands. The Leaf Rising Wind often serves as a setup for various combinations of powerful attacks.

Dynamic Entry

Dynamic Entry is a high-impact taijutsu technique where the user moves towards their opponent with great speed, delivering a powerful extended kick upon impact. This technique is characterized by its surprise element, catching the opponent off guard and causing significant damage. The user’s confidence and strength play a crucial role in maximizing the effectiveness of Dynamic Entry. Rock Lee adopted this technique to mirror his mentor, Might Guy. Throughout his journey as a genin, chunin, and during the Fourth Great Ninja War, Lee used Dynamic Entry against various opponents. Furthermore, Dynamic Entry can be executed in collaboration with other users, resulting in Dual Dynamic Entry. This joint attack increases the impact and damage caused to the target. In a notable instance, Rock Lee and Might Guy performed the Double Dynamic Entry against Kisame Hoshigaki, ultimately defeating him in battle.

Shadow of the Dancing Leaf

The Shadow of the Dancing Leaf is a unique technique that relies on the user’s speed and durability. It involves closely shadowing the movements of an opponent, mirroring their every action like a shadow mimics the movement of a leaf. This technique demands a combination of skill and speed, making it a rare feat among genin. Rock Lee performed the Shadow of the Dancing Leaf early on when he was introduced to Naruto. This technique served as a valuable setup for various other techniques in Lee’s arsenal. For instance, he utilized this attack with the Lion Combo, a series of rapid and powerful strikes, against Sasuke Uchiha. Additionally, during the Chunin Exams, Lee used the Shadow of the Dancing Leaf as a setup for Primary Lotus, a technique that caused immense damage to Gaara.

Primary Lotus

After executing the Leaf Rising Wind technique, the user proceeds to pursue their opponent closely. At this moment, Rock Lee would use his bandages to restrain the target while they are still suspended in midair. As the user and the bound victim begin to fall down, the user rapidly rotates their body, generating tremendous momentum. Finally, the user forcefully throws the restrained target toward the ground. The technique, known as the Primary Lotus, is considered highly dangerous and demanding, as it requires the activation of the Eight Inner Gates. Due to the severe strain it places on the user’s body, Might Guy officially called it a forbidden technique. However, Rock Lee opposed this restriction and used the Primary Lotus during his battle against Gaara in the Chunin Exams. Faced with Gaara’s strong Sand Shield, Lee decided to unlock the Eight Inner Gates to pass this defense. The impact of the blow directly targeted Gaara’s head.

Hidden Lotus

The Hidden Lotus is a powerful technique that requires the activation of three of the Eight Inner Gates. By moving at such incredible velocity that they become practically invisible to their opponents, the Hidden Lotus launches a barrage of attacks from all directions. Similar to the Primary Lotus, the target is first thrown into the air with a powerful kick and subsequently restrained using bandages. Then, while airborne, the target becomes vulnerable to countless strikes. Finally, they are sent toward the ground with tremendous force. The Hidden Lotus stands as Rock Lee’s most powerful technique during his time as a genin. Its immense power allowed him to accomplish what no other shinobi had achieved before; breaking Gaara’s Sand Armor. As Lee’s strength and speed increased through his continuous training, the efficiency of his Hidden Lotus correspondingly grew.

One-Man Front Lotus

The One-Man Front Lotus is an advanced technique derived from Primary Lotus. Unlike the Primary Lotus, which requires a target, the One-Man Front Lotus involves the user advancing into the air and rapidly spinning at high velocity. The sheer force generated by the spinning motion creates powerful storms of wind and delivers immense damage upon impact, capable of clearing entire battlefields in a single strike. Rock Lee developed this technique as a result of his encounter with Master Chen, the esteemed taijutsu master of Konohagakure. Determined to surpass Chen’s Leaf Dragon God technique, Lee devised the One-Man Front Lotus. With the help of this technique, Lee was able to completely counter Chen’s legendary technique, showcasing the sheer power and effectiveness of the One-Man Front Lotus. Throughout the Fourth Great Ninja War, Lee once again performed the One-Man Front Lotus in his rematch against Master Chen.

Front Lotus: Eight Trigrams Palm Rotation

The Front Lotus: Eight Trigrams Palm Rotation is a collaborative ninjutsu technique that takes advantage of the unique abilities of Team 9. In this technique, Rock Lee and Neji Hyuga work together to execute this destructive attack. The process begins with both Lee and Neji jumping into the air. Lee then wraps Neji in bandages, preparing to perform the Primary Lotus. As they spin, Neji activates his Palm Rotation technique, releasing his chakra to enhance their speed and increase the damage. The combined force of Lee’s exceptional taijutsu skills and Neji’s mastery of the Eight Trigrams Palm Rotation results in a powerful and destructive strike that not only impacts the target but also leaves a significant impact on the surrounding landscape. By introducing Tenten into the equation, the Front Lotus: Eight Trigrams Palm Rotation can be further enhanced. When Tenten throws a string of explosive tags attached to kunai around Lee and Neji, the technique can be modified into the Accelerated Armed Palm Rotation. This variant of the technique incorporates explosive elements, adding an extra layer of destructive power to the attack.

Drunken Fist

The Drunken Fist taijutsu style is a unique and unconventional fighting technique that can only be performed by its user when they are under the influence of alcohol. This style relies on the unpredictable movements and irregular attack patterns of the user, making it difficult for enemies to anticipate and counter their actions. When under the influence of alcohol, the user experiences an increase in strength and heightened speed. According to Might Guy, the Drunken Fist technique is inherent and cannot be taught or learned. Rock Lee transformed into Drunken Lee for the first time after accidentally consuming alcohol while celebrating Neji’s promotion to chunin. In this drunk state, Lee was able to destroy an entire restaurant and hold his own against Neji and Might Guy, who are renowned shinobi in Konohagakure. During his battle against Kimimaro, Lee used the Drunken Fist with remarkable proficiency, posing a significant threat to his opponent. He nearly defeated Kimimaro before Gaara intervened.

Eight Inner Gates Formation

The Eight Inner Gates Formation is an advanced and highly dangerous technique that allows a user to forcefully unlock their chakra limiters, enabling a tremendous flow of power to flow through their body. This infusion of chakra grants the user extraordinary physical abilities, including immense strength, astonishing speed, and the capability to counter enemy jutsu using their bare fists. However, opening the final gate of the technique comes at the ultimate cost—the user’s life. Rock Lee managed to unlock five gates before participating in the Chunin Exams. With dedicated training, he achieved mastery over the entire technique by the time he reached adulthood, surpassing even his mentor, Might Guy. As a result, Rock Lee stands as the strongest taijutsu master in the world. Throughout his journeys, Rock Lee used the power of the Eight Inner Gates to achieve remarkable feats. He successfully defeated Gaara by utilizing the enhanced abilities granted by the gates. Lee also took down the powerful Tailed Beasts and even single-handedly destroyed a meteor that posed a grave threat to Konohagakure.

Weakness

  • Lack of Ninjutsu and Genjutsu Skills: One of Rock Lee’s primary weaknesses is his inability to perform ninjutsu and genjutsu techniques. While his exceptional taijutsu compensates for this to some extent, his reliance on physical combat leaves him at a disadvantage against opponents who can use diverse and long-range techniques.
  • Limited Range: As a close-quarters combat specialist, Rock Lee’s effectiveness diminishes at long distances. He struggles to engage opponents who can maintain distance and attack from afar, making it challenging for him to counter long-range attacks or utilize strategic positioning in battles.

In this technique, Rock Lee opens the first of the Eight Gates, the Gate of Opening, which grants him an immense boost in speed and strength. He then launches a series of high-speed kicks and strikes on his opponent. The Primary Lotus is known for its speed, precision, and the incredible force it delivers.

Facts/Trivia

  • Rock Lee’s lack of affiliation with any noble ninja clan in Konohagakure does not discourage him. In fact, he establishes his own clan called the Lee clan, as depicted in the novel for Boruto: Naruto The Movie. This decision reflects Lee’s confidence in his mastery of taijutsu, as he believes he possesses the skills necessary to lead his own clan.
  • Overall, Lee is characterized as a positive and determined individual who remains tough in the face of challenges. However, his approach to overcoming setbacks can sometimes present negative actions. While pushing oneself through rigorous training is generally admirable, Lee has been known to take it to extremes. This is particularly evident during his time in the Academy, where he would push himself to the point of physical exhaustion if he felt he had failed himself or others. While his commitment to self-improvement is praiseworthy, it is important for Lee to maintain a healthy balance and not push himself beyond his limits.

However, Sakura is already married to Sasuke, making Tenten a more likely candidate. Despite this speculation, the series has not confirmed Tenten as Metal Lee’s mother. Moreover, Rock Lee’s limited interactions with his former teammates in Boruto make it unlikely that Tenten is his mother. In the series, Tenten primarily appears to showcase her new career rather than her personal life or involvement with Metal Lee.

  • Rock Lee, in the official Shonen Jump popularity poll, was ranked in 9th place. This ranking, which combined data from previous polls, came as a surprise to Masashi Kishimoto. Kishimoto had a fondness for Lee and enjoyed drawing him, so he was pleased to see that the character resonated with the audience. The positive reception of Lee inspired Kishimoto to want to explore and develop the character further. However, due to various circumstances, Kishimoto was not able to fully explore Lee’s potential in the Naruto series.
  • Rock Lee had multiple opponents he desired to have a rematch with and defeat. Among them were Naruto, Neji, Sasuke, and Gaara. These desires were expressed before the death of Neji, so it is possible that Lee’s perspective and feelings may have changed following Neji’s passing.
  • While Rock Lee doesn’t take on the role of the protagonist in the main Naruto series, he does become the center of attention in a spin-off comedy manga and anime called Rock Lee & His Ninja Pals. In this series, the storyline focuses on humor rather than serious themes like war. It features amusing scenarios, such as Lee’s teacher, Guy, transforming into a baby. Rock Lee & His Ninja Pals was created by Kenji Taira, one of Masashi Kishimoto’s assistants.
